Abu Dhabi University leads the pack with six nominations in Times Higher Education’s second annual awards for the Arab region.

More than 400 entries were received from across 15 different countries/territories for the THE Awards Arab World. The winners will be announced in early December.

This year’s awards feature 12 categories, two of which are new: Most Innovative Teacher of the Year, and Outstanding Contribution to Entrepreneurialism. There are a total of 96 finalists.

With six opportunities to win, Abu Dhabi University makes the most appearances in the shortlist – followed by The University of Jordan, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, and the American University of Sharjah, all with five.

Phil Baty, chief global affairs officer at THE, said it had been a huge challenge to whittle down the entrants into the “elite group” of nominees, and those who have made the cut should be “extremely proud of their achievements already”.

THE Awards Arab World were launched to identify and promote innovative and inspirational work taking place at higher education institutions, whatever their size, reputation or focus, and wherever they may be located across the region,” he said.

“They are inclusive by design, and we’re thrilled that a record number of individuals and teams have chosen these awards to shout about their exceptional work this year.”

These are the second awards specifically dedicated to the region, following last year’s THE Awards MENA.

The finalists this year come from 53 different institutions in 12 countries/territories. The best represented countries in the shortlist are Egypt, with 24 appearances, the United Arab Emirates (18) and Jordan and Saudi Arabia (both with 12).

This year’s ceremony will take place in Amman, Jordan in early December, during the THE Arab Universities Summit.
