General Information

Jiangnan University, situated in Wuxi by beautiful Taihu Lake, is a national key “211 Project” university and is selected into “First-Class Discipline Project”, falling under the Ministry of Education.

Jiangnan University’s roots stretch back to 1902 when its predecessor, San Jiang Normal School, began its first term. In 1958, Jiangnan University began its independent existence as Wuxi Institute of Light Industry, which later merged with two other colleges in 2001, and was renamed as Jiangnan University by the Ministry of Education. The university, with the area of 208 hectares, consists of 18 schools and is the home to 3,447staff and faculty members, 20,785 full-time undergraduates, 11, 867 postgraduates and 308 international students.

Known as “the pearl of China ’s higher education in light industry”, Jiangnan University has launched a new journey toward the strategic objective of “building itself into a research-driven university with distinctive characteristics”, abiding by the motto of “learning and practice to perfection”.

Rankings

In the fourth round of National Discipline Assessment by the Ministry of Education, our Food Science and Technology and Light Industry Technology and Engineering was assessed at an ‘A+’ level and Design at an ‘A-’ level. According to ESI , Jiangnan University ranks No.56 in China and our 10 disciplines (Agricultural Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Biology & Biochemistry, Materials Science, Clinical Medicine, Computer Science, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Environment & Ecology, Microbiology) fall within the top 1% globally and agricultural science is in 0.12‰.

General Information

Jiangnan University upholds the principle of morality education and vigorously cultivates high-quality innovative professionals. The university passed Undergraduate Teaching Evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education’s in both 2006 (with a score of ‘A’) and 2015. It offers 51 undergraduate programs and currently has 20，785 full-time undergraduate students, 11，867graduate students and 308 international students. Jiangnan University has launched 4 “National Comprehensive Reform Pilot Programs” and 15 “National Featured Programs”, and 10 programs in the “Education and Training Project for Excellent Engineers” and “Education and Training Project for Agricultural & Forestry Talents” by the Ministry of Education. Jiangnan University has also set up 5 Innovative Experimental Bases for Talent Training and 8 Engineering Practice Education Centers and Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centers. The university also enjoys 33 “National Excellent Courses” (including bilingual and open courses), 56 fine-quality and planning teaching materials and 15 “National Teaching Achievement Award”.

Jiangnan University actively explores elite education in the overall context of popularized education and has established “Honor School” to cultivate top-notch innovative talents. The university has received many awards on innovation and entrepreneurship, such as  “National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Base for Practical Education”. The undergraduate program of Food Science and Engineering is the first of its kind to be certified by Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) in Asia.

Jiangnan University currently has 7 “First-Level Disciplines to Confer Doctoral Degrees”, including Food Science and Technology, Light Industry Technology and Engineering, Textile Science and Engineering, Control Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Technology, Design and Environmental Science and Engineering and 29 “First-Level Disciplines to Confer Master Degrees”, covering the disciplinary categories of economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, medicine, management and the arts. The university also confers 14 professional master degrees.

Faculty

Jiangnan University boasts 1271 graduate tutors, including 329 doctoral tutors and 924 master tutors.

International Exchanges

There are many graduate students successfully accepted by National Scholarship Council every year. To further improve the internationalization of postgraduate education and enhance the international competitiveness of postgraduate students, Jiangnan University has established graduate overseas training programs, doctoral graduate international exchange grants and so forth to fund outstanding graduate students to study in well-known universities or research institutes and participate in high-level international conferences. At present, the proportion of overseas exchanges for doctoral students reaches 41.7%.
