Anglia Ruskin University has named Iain Martin as its next vice-chancellor.
Professor Martin, who has served as deputy vice-chancellor (academic) at the University of New South Wales in Australia since 2012, will replace Michael Thorne, who retires in March 2016.
Anglia Ruskin said Professor Martin had transformed the University of New South Wales’ approach to teaching and learning with an increased emphasis on the innovative use of digital resources. He also undertook a fundamental review of its governance structure to better prepare it for an increasingly challenging political and economic environment.
Jerome Booth, chairman at Anglia Ruskin University, said: “The board of governors is thrilled that Iain has agreed to join us at this exciting time. Anglia Ruskin University is a dynamic organisation which has come a long way in a relatively short period.
“We have ambitious plans for the future and we know that Iain will do a terrific job in taking Anglia Ruskin forward to still greater achievements.”
Prior to his post at the University of New South Wales, Professor Martin held a number of senior academic positions at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. From 2005-11 he was dean of medical and health sciences, and as deputy vice-chancellor he led the university’s international activities.
He said: “I am absolutely delighted to be taking up this role. It is a great opportunity to build on the significant achievements of this innovative university. I look forward to working with staff and students across the university to create a distinctive future for Anglia Ruskin.”
Professor Martin was born in Newport, Wales and studied medicine at the University of Leeds before moving to New Zealand in 2000.
