The University of Malakand (abbreviated as UOM) was founded in 2001 on the banks of the Swat River in Chakdara in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.
It was established through a charter issued by the Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and it is recognised by the Higher Education Commission of Islamabad. The public university offers undergraduate degrees and postgraduate degrees in various academic disciplines, these include biotechnology, botany, IT, economics, education, English, geology, Islamic studies, mathematics, journalism and mass communication, law, management studies, Pashto and oriental languages, political science, physics, psychology, sociology, software engineering, statistics, tourism and hotel management, software engineering and zoology.
There are a total of 5,000 students, 4,300 of whom are undergraduate and 700 of whom are postgraduate.
The Malakand District is home to around 567,000 people, most of whom are Pashtuns whose mother tongue is Pashto. In 1970, following the abolition of the princely states, the agency became the Malakand Division, which was divided into districts, one of which was the Malakand Protected Area, known as Malakand District.
In the year 2000, the Malakand Division was abolished. The region’s biggest income streams come from trade, public service and agriculture - the soil of Malakand moist and irrigated by the Swat River which the university looks out over. There are a few tourist spots and scenic areas in Malakand such as Jabban and the Malakan hydro-electric project.
The area is surrounded by mountains rich with mineral resources, deposits of chromite iron, china clay and fuller earth have all been found in Malakand.
