关于 Tokyo Metropolitan University

Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU) is a public university founded in 1949 and primarily funded by the Government of Tokyo. Through scholarships, it is committed to pioneering the future of the world by contributing to the social, cultural, economic, and technological vitality of Tokyo and beyond. We continually strive to innovate in education and research across a wide range of disciplines, emphasizing close interactions between faculty and students.

TMU currently comprises seven academic divisions both at the undergraduate and graduate levels, 13 prominent research institutes, and a herbarium with the vast collection of plant specimens collected by Dr. Tomitaro Makino, the “Father of Japanese Botany.” TMU is home to approximately 650 faculty members and over 9,000 undergraduate and graduate students from all around the world, making TMU’s campus community diverse and intellectually stimulating.

TMU is highly ranked by research citations in several world university rankings, and boasts a number of internationally acclaimed and award-winning scholars, including Dr. Haruo Inoue, Senior Leading Professor, recipient of the Porter Medal for his contribution to the science of photochemistry, and Dr. Nobutaka Ono, who was named in the AI 2000 Most Influential Scholar Annual List. Partnerships with the Government of Tokyo enable TMU to pursue high-quality, cutting-edge research. In 2020, TMU rolled out Japan’s biggest local 5G network over its campuses, as part of the “‘Future of Tokyo’ Strategy” proposed by the Government, specifically contributing to the vision of a “Smart Tokyo” that harnesses Tokyo's full potential for its residents using digital technology. Faculty research is extensively and effectively integrated into academic courses, generating positive synergies between research and teaching. TMU students across disciplines benefit from the unique opportunities and resources offered by such research-teaching synergies.

With three campuses spread across Tokyo, TMU provides an optimal academic environment that satisfies the multiple needs of a diverse community, while showcasing various facets of Tokyo-from metropolises to lush greenery.

TMU is organized into seven academic divisions, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels: humanities and social sciences, economics and business management, law and politics, natural sciences, urban environmental sciences, systems design, and health sciences.

To create a campus community that is internationally diverse and intellectually stimulating, TMU has developed a full-degree program in biology at the undergraduate level and some graduate-level courses exclusively taught in English. The Department of Biological Sciences will begin accepting applications for fall enrollment in 2024 in order to attract the best students from all over the world. Furthermore, the humanities and social sciences at TMU provide international students with perfect opportunities to enhance their understanding of Japanese society, culture, and language from various perspectives with top scholars in each field. Additionally, TMU offers generous and competitive scholarship programs for qualifying students.

TMU boasts 13 prominent research institutes in areas such as genomics and bioinformatics, superconductivity science and engineering, and hydrogen energy-based society. High-level research is widely and effectively integrated into academic courses, accelerating the positive synergy among research, teaching, and learning, which is the university's hallmark, allowing it to contribute even more to Tokyo and beyond.
