St. Joseph's College (SJC) is a liberal arts college in Brooklyn, New York, USA. The college was founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1916 as St. Joseph's College for Women. The college moved to its current location in 1918 after outgrowing its original buildings. The first degrees were granted in 1920 to a class of fourteen graduates. In 1970 the charter was changed to allow male students and the college was renamed St. Joseph’s and in 1979 the university opened a new campus in Patchogue. The university has continued to grow enrolment and expand its academic offering and now has multiple campuses (the main ones being Brooklyn and Long Island) in the area with modern academic and sporting facilities for students.
Today SJC is a thriving private, coeducational liberal arts college which, although independent, is still affiliated with the Catholic church. The student body numbers around 4,500 split across the two main campuses and includes students studying a range of postgraduate and undergraduate qualifications. The college offers over 50 undergraduate majors, pre-professional and certificate programs as well as graduate training in management, business, health care management, human services, nursing, accounting and education.
The college’s Long Island campus at Patchogue has a 25 acre outdoor sports facility where baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer and tennis are played. There are also numerous academic buildings, a library, swimming pool and playhouse. The Brooklyn campus is home to academic and administrative facilities.
