Furman University

Based in South Carolina, Furman University is one of the oldest  private institutions of higher learning in the region. Founded in 1826, the 750 acre campus was named after Richard Furman of Charleston – a clergyman considered one of the most important Protestant leaders in the US.

Not far from the campus, in Greenville, there are a plethora of restaurants and eateries, shopping districts, museums, art galleries and theatres. 

On campus, there are more than 200 clubs and organisations, which include: Encouraging Respect of Sexualities, Environmental Action Group, Furman Dance Company, Pauper Players, and the Religious Council.

Moreover all students must take advantage of campus events through the Cultural Life Programme, which stipulates that before graduation, students must attend at least 36 school events. 

In accordance to national policy, Furman University works to conserve, reduce and recycle on campus, while also constructing green buildings. The university hopes to achieve carbon neutrality by 2026. Furman University received a grade of A- from the Sustainable Endowments Institute on its College Sustainability Report Card in 2011.

Athletic teams – nicknamed the Paladins – at Furman competes in NCAA Division I athletics, and at the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in football. There are some 18 varsity teams, as well as a further 16 sports club.

There’s a variety of media outlets available to students, such as the university magazine – The Echo – which is student written and produced. There’s also a newspaper called The Paladin, as well as a TV channel called FU2. 

Notable alumni include Marshall Clement "Mark" Sanford, Jr., an American politician and member of the Republican Party, Clint Dempsey, an American professional soccer player who plays for Seattle Sounders FC in Major League Soccer, and John Broadus Watson, an American psychologist who established the psychological school of behaviourism.
