Cumberland University is a prestigious liberal arts college established in 1842 in Lebannon, Tennessee, US. It offers undergraduate degrees in the sciences and social sciences, business administration and economics, education, physical education and special education, music, fine arts and nursing. Its graduate degree programs include business administration, education and public service management. Its master's programmes cover education, fine arts, business administration, nursing, criminal justice.
The main campus of 50 acres is located 30 miles east of Nashville. Its three other sites are The McFarland Hall site, housing the Jeanette C. Rudy School of Nursing, The Mt. Juliet Center, housing the School for Online and Professional Studies; and the Athletic Complex, housing the Bulldog football program and athletic training facilities. Available sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, volleyball and wrestling.
Some of Cumberland’s noteworthy alumni are United States Secretary of State, Cordell Hull, who also was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945, James Lafayette Bomar, president of Rotary International, Thomas P. Gore, United States senator, over eighty congressmen, including Albert Gore, Senior, two justices of the U.S. Supreme Court, Howell Edmunds Jackson and Horace Harmon Lurton, thirteen governors, including Frank G. Clement, three ambassadors, including Edward Albright, U.S. Ambassador to Finland, local, state and federal judges, including Charles Dickson Clark, and 50 college or university professors, including politologist John Burgess. One of CU’s recent graduates is Edward Labry, president of First Data USA.
