Established in 1959, California Lutheran University (CLU) is a private, liberal arts institution owned by the California Lutheran Education Foundation and located in city of Thousand Oaks in southern California.
Today the university is home to over 2,800 undergraduates and 1,300 graduates who are each enrolled in one of the five major academic schools – namely the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Management, the Graduate School of Education, the Graduate School of Psychology, and the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary.
Class sizes are small and undergraduates have the option of 36 majors and 35 minors, with master’s and doctoral degrees also available.
Located between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, the 225-acre main campus is close to the Pacific Coast and is home to the majority of university buildings, although there are off-campus CLU-affiliated centres in Berkeley, Woodland Hills, Westlake Village, Oxnard and Santa Maria.
There are a variety of student accommodation complexes as well as state-of-the-art sports facilities including the 9,500 square foot Forrest Fitness Center, the Samuelson Aquatic Centre and two stadiums. CLU field 21 different sports teams in a wide range of disciplines, winning more than 60 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships between them since 2006.
In fact, CLU has produced a number of famous sports stars and coaches over the years, including former Detroit Lions Head Coach Rod Marinelli, retired Major League Baseball All-Star pitcher Kevin Gross and Jason Hirsh, a Major League Baseball pitcher.
Other notable alumni include writer James Duke Mason, Disney Channel star Jason Dolley and Miss California 2006 winner Jacquelynne Fontaine.
