Birmingham Southern College (BSC) is an American liberal arts college affiliated with the Methodist Church and located in Birmingham, Alabama in the USA. Although it can trace its history back to 1856 the college was born out of a merger of two other institutions, Southern University and Birmingham College which came together to from Birmingham Southern in 1918.
Teaching at BSC tries to focus on problem solving, communication and become self-reliant. The university currently offers around 25 undergraduate majors, 25 minors and 10 special programs. BSC is often rated highly for the quality of its teaching staff and its graduates.
The BSC campus covers 192 acres south of downtown Birmingham and houses 45 traditional red brick university buildings in green, leafy open spaces. The residence halls and academic buildings stand alongside sports stadiums, softball parks and athletics facilities. There are also art studios, a theatre, planetarium, chapel and a dance studio. The campus has its own lake and plenty of space for recreation and relaxation.
There is a tradition at BSC that graduating seniors will climb to the roof and ring the bell in the bell tower to mark the completion of their studies.
There is a very active sporting life at BSC with their various teams, known as the Panthers, competing in the third division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. The college currently fields 22 sports with many facilities and options for men and women to compete.
