Safe sex, safer publishers

(Photograph) - Gay men are offered material that represents safe sex as fun, highly erotic, imaginative and pleasurable (left) but that for heterosexual women (right) is devoid of any suggestion of erotic excitement, pleasure, desire or fun. The latter, from a Terrence Higgins Trust leaflet, was turned down by Taylor and Francis because "we cannot publish any of the proposed illustrations depicting nudity and various sexual acts. We do not believe it is in keeping with the series (Gender and Society: Feminist Perspectives) or the kinds of text we publish".
