Letter: Salary turn-off

The article on the costs of living in London highlights another issue (Analysis, THES, February 9). The example quoted shows that a high-quality graduate with a DPhil from Oxford starts as a lecturer on a salary of £18,731. When most graduates, and now teachers, can expect to start on £20,000-plus, why would anybody want to become a lecturer?
