Mendel University in Brno is located in Brno in the Czech Republic. Brno is the second largest city in the Czech Republic.
It was named after Gregor Mendel, the botanist and "father of modern genetics". It is the oldest independent specialised university in the Czech Republic.
It was founded in 1919 and now consists of five faculties including agronomy; forestry and wood technology; business and economics; horticulture; regional development and international studies and lifelong education. The university offers more than 100 different graduate degree programmes taught in both English and Czech.
The facilities include the Botanical Garden and Arboretum, which cover 11 hectares. As well as providing teaching opportunities, students and staff are able to relax and study there. There is an extensive orchid collection, 500 alpine plants, 2,000 perennials and 4,000 woody plants.
The Training Agricultural Enterprise Žabčice is located around 25km from Brno and aims to help students learn practical skills in arable farming and animal husbandry. The Training Forest Enterprise Masarykův Les Křtiny covers more than 10,000 hectares and has both aesthetic and educational functions.
International students make up almost 20 per cent of the total student body. The university is part of a number of international networks including the European University Association, the Association for European Life Science Universities, European Network of International Relations Officers and the European Association of ERASMUS Coordinators.
Participation in these networks also facilitates study exchange programmes for students.
The university works with a number of companies and several careers fairs are held on campus every year.
