Whitworth University is a Christian private institution of higher education established in 1890.
Whitworth offers undergraduate majors and programmes including american studies, biblical studies, cross-cultural studies, human-computer interaction, peace studies, speech communication. There is an 11 to one student to staff ratio.
On its website, the university says: “While some Christian universities limit discussion or exploration of certain ideas, our professors encourage students to ask tough questions and search fearlessly for answers wherever they may be found. And while many institutions reject any role for faith in the pursuit of truth, Whitworth lifts up Christian conviction and intellectual curiosity as complementary rather than competing values.”
The university offers 20 varsity sports in NCAA Division III. Student athletes make up under a fifth of the student body.
Students at Whitworth come from from 33 states and 35 countries.
Some Whitworth alumni include Karla Parbon, who founded the nonprofit company Partners Through Art - a common venture of visual, theatre and dance artists serving victims of social injustice and Caleb Hug, who is a senior software development engineer with the Microsoft Bing Experimentation Team (after receiving a PhD in computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Jena Lee Nardella, co-founder and executive director of Blood:Water Mission, a ministry providing clean blood and water in Africa is also among the alumni.
