关于 Whitman College

Whitman College was established in 1882 as a selective private liberal arts college situated in Walla Walla, Washington, US.

There are 45 department majors you can choose from including anthropology, biology, classical studies, gender studies, race and ethnic studies and theatre. The student to faculty ratio is nine to one, which may allow for more contact time with professors. Whitman also prides itself on the rather unusual statistic of having a one to one student to tree ratio.

Students at Whitman come from 42 states and 31 countries and about 40 per cent of them study abroad in their junior year.

Community life on campus is divided between volunteering, student organisations and athletics. Some 70 per cent of students volunteer and 80 per cent engage in NCAA’s Division III intramural sports. There are 15 varsity sports available such as baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis and volleyball. The intramural sports include ultimate frisbee and table tennis.

Some outstanding alumni are one of the founders of nuclear medicine, Edith Hinkley Quimby and William O Douglas, a former associate justice of the Supreme Court of the US. Other notable alumni include Diane Middlebrook, biographer, poet and lecturer of feminist studies at Stanford University, John W Stanton, chairman of the board of the Seattle Mariners, astronaut Dorothy Metcalf-Lindenburger, New York Times journalist John Markoff and Helen Lucile Lomen, the first woman to work as a law clerk for a Supreme Court.
