Austin Peay State University, located in Clarksville, is considered to be the fastest-growing university in Tennessee.
The university is located on an urban campus in Clarksville and the school is named after former Tennessee Governor Austin Peay – a Clarksville native.
Academics at Austin Peay are organised into six colleges, which are: art, communication, history and philosophy, languages and literature, music, and theatre and dance.
Students of Austin Peay can participate in a wide variety of activities as there are more than 100 clubs and organisations, which offer activities such as music, sport, and languages.
Many of the school's athletic teams compete in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC), while the football team has participated in the Pioneer Football League. Notable players such as Trenton Hassell and Bubba Wells continue to emerge from the university.
In 2009, the University opened a $4.7 million education facility at Fort Campbell, which greatly increased its classroom space and provided additional room for faculty offices.
Moreover there are two Centres of Excellence – the Centre of Excellence for the Creative Arts and the Centre of Excellence for Field Biology which have seen such outstanding performance that they have earned the title of "Accomplished" Centres of Excellence among Tennessee's public universities.
Within the last few years, the university has opened several new facilities, including the Maynard Mathematics and Computer Science Building, the Governor's Terrace residence halls and the new Fortera Stadium.
Notable alumni include Bob Harper, a personal trainer who gained fame on The Biggest Loser, Riley Darnell, a former Tennessee State Senator and former Tennessee Secretary of State, and Josh Rouse, a noted Singer-Songwriter.
