The University of Michigan–Dearborn (UM-D) is located in Dearborn in Michigan and it is one of the two satellite campuses of the University of Michigan. The other satellite campus is in Flint.
As a result, students have access to a wide array of facilities across both campuses. This includes the university’s extensive library systems, galleries, and sporting events of the main campus.
The campus is situated on the outskirts of Detroit and was founded on land donated by Ford Motor Co. in 1956. The Henry Ford Estate – which was home to the automotive pioneer and his wife – is situated on the campus and is now a National Historic Landmark.
Looking back to its origins, UM-D was initially known for its elite engineering and management programmes. The curriculum has expanded to now offer over 90 different undergraduate degrees, as well as masters and doctoral degrees.
Two of the universities beast known colleges are the College of Computer Science and Engineering and the College of Business.
There are a wealth of clubs and organisations on campus comprising of a range of interests. These include: Society of Women Engineers, Biochemistry Club, Association of Student Anthropologists, Psychology Students Association and the Sociology Club.
Moreover, media is strong on campus. The Michigan Journal, the student newspaper, has been student produced since 1971. There is also a student run radio station called WUMD.
Notable alumni include Rima Fakih, a Lebanese-American actress, model, professional wrestler and beauty pageant titleholder who won Miss USA in 2010, Kimberly Frost, an American author of paranormal romance, and Rudy Hatfield, a retired professional basketball player who played for Laguna Lakers in the Metropolitan Basketball Association.
