Illinois Wesleyan University was founded in 1850 and is sponsored by the United Methodist Church, which is how the university got its name.

The campus offers a range of accommodation options and a collection of top-quality facilities, including the 3,450-seat sports arena known as the Shirk Center, the award-winning Evelyn Chapel and the Ames Library, which has a collection of over 360,000 volumes.

There are two main colleges – the College of Liberal Arts, which is comprised of 17 individual departments, and the College of Fine Arts, which includes the Ames School of Art, the School of Music and the School of Theatre Arts – as well as the School of Nursing, established in 1959.
Around half of Illinois Wesleyan University students study abroad for a portion of their course and the university maintains good international ties with institutions in more than 70 countries across the world.
