Located in the city of Atlanta, Georgia, Spelman College liberal arts college was founded in 1881. The college is named for Laura Spelman, wife of donor John D. Rockefeller.
Spelman offers 29 majors subjects, in courses including economics, philosophy, and psychology. The Biology Department offers some good quality facilities for undergraduate students in the US, including a level 2 tissue culture lab, chemical prep and autoclave room, and specialist Electrophysiology equipment.
Atlanta is a key metropolitan area of the American South, and offers a wide range of historical and cultural activities, as well as extensive travel options through nearby Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the largest in the world. Alliance Theatre in offers one year internships to drama students at Spelman, and the college itself is host to the Museum of Fine Art, the only museum in the nation with a dedicated emphasis on the works of women of the African descent.
The African Diaspora & The World programme encourages students to learn about African history and cultural impact in an increasingly globalised world. Study abroad opportunities are available for students through the department of international studies, and past students have studies at over thirty nations worldwide, including China, South Africa, and Senegal.
Alumnae of Spelman include author of The Color Purple Alice Walker, CEO of Walmart division Sam’s Club, Rosalind Brewer, opera singer Mattiwilda Dobbs, civil rights lawyer Dovey Johnson Roundtree, and model Sharmell Sullivan-Huffman.
The university motto ‘Our Whole School For Christ’ reflects the college’s origins as a female seminary. Since 2013, Spelman has not offered athletics programmes.
