The capital’s dominance is clear: research done at universities right across the UK affects London. The city is impacted by research done by universities in Scotland, North East and North West England, the Midlands, Oxford and Cambridge, as well as at London institutions themselves.
But other cities rely more on their own institutions or their immediate region: Liverpool and Sheffield universities contribute somewhat to Manchester; Glasgow and Dundee university research impacts Edinburgh; while London and Cambridge universities have an impact on Birmingham.
The data are drawn from 2014 research excellence framework impact case studies, and compiled by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. More maps can be produced by visiting Hefce's REF impact page.
