Guide cuts red tape

You omitted a crucial phrase from the Association of Colleges' statement on dismissal procedure in its response to the Department for Education and Employment's statutory consultation on accountability in further education ("College chiefs call to simplify sacking", THES, January 29).

Omitted after "we believe that the process for the dismissal of staff is over-bureaucratic and should be streamlined" was "in accordance with ACAS good practice guidance". This guidance, if adopted, would assure colleges that they will offer employees the best possible protection in difficult circumstances.

It would offer clear and straightforward procedures with appropriate opportunities for representation and opportunities to answer allegations against an individual. At present, procedures are potentially over-bureaucratic and not necessarily in the interests of either party.
