Ziauddin University has a history that dates back to 1986 when the Ziauddin Group founded the school of nursing. In 1994 the Dr. Ziauddin Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences was established. The following year Ziauddin Medical University opened and set up a health centre in the neighbouring community. In 2005 the university was renamed Ziauddin University.
The university was founded in memory of Sir Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad, an Indian mathematician, philosopher and political figure. His vision was to provide quality education to Muslims across the Pakistan.
The university is located in Karachi, a city in Sindh province, southern Pakistan.
There are seven academic faculties at the university: health sciences, law, liberal arts and human sciences, eastern medicine and natural sciences, engineering science technology and management, pharmacy, and the nursing and midwifery. There are a number of departments within each faculty offering both undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
Since 2016 the university has hosted an annual International Conference. In 2019 the conference focused on challenges in drug discovery and therapeutics. The faculty of liberal arts and human sciences organised the first multidisciplinary international virtual conference in 2020 on diversity, inclusion and equity: synergies and challenges in the wake of Covid-19.
