University Professor of Byzantine Studies

(full time, limited to a period of 4 years, as of Oct. 1st, 2025)

The position:

The Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Vienna is a lively, international and dynamic research and teaching institution that has been particularly successful in attracting research funding in recent years. It has one of the best libraries in the field of Byzantine studies.

We are looking for a scholar with a research focus in the field of Byzantine Studies who enjoys teaching, sharing and transmitting knowledge.

The successful candidate will be expected to make a significant contribution to the teaching programme, research activities and intellectual life of the Department, to supervise academic theses and to contribute to the daily life of the Department. The candidate will be expected to teach eight semester hours per week (among which two lectures and one MA or BA seminar). Courses can be held in German or English.

ABOUT XJTLU

In 2006 Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) was created by the University of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong University – a top ten university in China. Offering a unique international education experience, XJTLU brings together excellent research practice and expertise from both institutions and gives students the skills and knowledge they need to secure careers in a global marketplace. ABOUT SCHOOL OF ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY

The School of Advanced Technology has five departments (intelligent Science, Computing, Mechatronics and Robotics, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Communications and networking). As a research and practice-led school our faculty and staff are committed to providing our students with a challenging and stimulating environment, as well as unlocking their full potential. RESPONSIBILITIES

Applicants will have extensive teaching experience, have published high quality papers in their area of expertise, have been successful in obtaining research grants, and have substantial experience in the supervision of research students. The successful candidate, in addition to teaching typically two modules/courses per year (i.e. one per semester), will provide leadership in curriculum development and enhancing our research profile at the international level. They are expected to assume administrative responsibilities based on their experience.
