The role

An exciting opportunity for a part-time research assistant to work on a Dunhill Medical Trust funded project developing materials to train a link worker to work with middle-aged and older adults with cerebral palsy has arisen. As part of this role you will work closely with our project partners UP – The Adult Cerebral Palsy Movement (https://upmovement.org.uk/) and a team of clinicians and researchers based at UCLH, Brunel University London, and The University of Sussex.

The role involves mapping literature on ageing with cerebral palsy and searching for community organisations who could support people with cerebral palsy in North Central London. You will also support with the co-designing of training materials for a specialised link worker, helping draft an ethics application and assist in developing engaging materials to share our project outcomes with the public. Finally, you will support with the analysis of interview data. You will also work closely with expert advisory groups and stakeholders to ensure an impactful project. 

The position is available starting January 2025 at the University of Surrey, Guildford, UK, under the supervision of Dr Kimberley Smith and Dr Erica Ranzato.

About you

A BSc in psychology, gerontology, disability studies, sociology or health sciences is desirable, though we would consider other relevant backgrounds. 	An interest in developing their research on ageing with a lifelong disability
	Excellent research skills that will support with literature searching and mapping community support organisations

Our school

The School of Engineering is one of the most research-intensive Schools within the University. The School offers Engineering degree programs in Aerospace Systems, Chemical, Civil, Computer Systems, Electrical and Electronic, Environmental, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Medical, and, Renewable Energy as well as degree programs in Surveying and Geospatial Engineering. It is rated well above the sector average for quality of overall experience for undergraduate engineering students and for median salaries and is equipped with modern teaching and research facilities for staff.

The University was established to serve the Hunter and Central Coast. The Hunter region has the greatest growth in NSW outside of the Sydney Basin and is home to the Newcastle Port, Williamtown airport and the Williamtown RAAF base as well as developers and manufacturers of a diverse range of technologies and devices. It is rich in natural mineral and water resources, electricity generation capacity and food and wine producers and offers exciting opportunities for research and industrial collaboration. The School is highly research active, contributing substantially to the overall research inputs and outputs of the College and University. The School of Engineering is seeking to appoint a Lecturer specialising in Mechatronics Engineering, undertaking research into priority areas including energy-based modelling and control. As the degree program is focussed on Autonomous Systems, the successful applicant will teach from a model-based control systems perspective. You will also have the opportunity to support the NU Marine team (as part of the international RobotX competition) and create and evolve ongoing collaborative relationships with local and international Mechatronics industries, including industries operating in the Williamtown RAAF airbase precinct.

How will you inspire us

The successful candidates will have:


	A PhD in Mechatronics Engineering or related field with a strong background in analytical mechanics and energy-based control methods.
	Demonstrated record of high-quality contribution to research, including evidence of international and national research and industry collaborations/partnerships.
	Demonstrated recent record of successfully taking a chief investigator role (often in conjunction with more experienced researchers) in funding initiatives and obtaining, competitive, external research funding including industry funded research.
	Demonstrated recent active supervision of honours and masters research projects as well as Higher Degree by Research students.
	Demonstrated recent ability to contribute to teaching at undergraduate and honours levels, taking responsibility for the preparation and delivery of course modules. Specialist areas of teaching for this role include analytical mechanics and energy-based control methods.
	Demonstrated recent ability to efficiently perform in allocated internal roles, sharing academic service responsibilities, contributing to outcomes of internal committees, and beginning to develop external collaborations.
	 Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including an inter-disciplinary way of working, capacity to build relationships and engagement with industry stakeholders.

About the position

This position is in the Enabling Programs team, part of the Widening Participation and Outreach department within the Office of the Provost. Widening Participation and Outreach is responsible for activities and programs that inform post-secondary school aspiration and access to university students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds, and Enabling Programs is the academic unit that supports university entry for aspiring students without a traditional entry pathway. The team delivers the Tertiary Preparation Program (TPP), one of Victoria’s major Enabling Programs, as an ATAR-alternative pathway program for school students (Aspire Prepare) and plays a key role in supporting the University’s equity mission.

Reporting to the Academic Director, Widening Participation, the Lecturer, Enabling Programs, leads the Enabling Programs team, managing two Associate Lectures as well as casual academic staff. The incumbent is responsible for day-to-day academic administration including acting as Subject Coordinator for the program’s subjects, ensuring grading and student support is delivered in a timely manner, and maintaining subject role-overs. The position works closely with other colleagues in the Widening Participation and Outreach department, as well as teams across the University, particularly Admissions.

The academic programs (TPP and Prepare) are taught entirely online. The subjects are asynchronous but intensively taught, using supportive and scaffolded developmental feedback on frequent, low stakes assessments to develop learner confidence and academic skills. Experience in an innovative online learning environment will be highly valued.

Key Selection Criteria

To be considered for this position, you will have:


	PhD degree or equivalent accreditation and standing recognized by the University/profession as appropriate.
	Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching, curriculum development and subject coordination in online modes, preferable asynchronous, as evidenced by sustained high results on student feedback on teaching surveys, teaching excellence awards or through other forms of evidence.
	Experience working within University policy and procedural environments including academic administration tasks (grades, subject administration, responding to academic misconduct etc).
	Emerging or established engagement with the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, in particular in the areas of: supporting academic skill development at the Enabling level and/or effective and innovative online pedagogies and/or supporting the transition to higher education of people from diverse/disadvantaged backgrounds.
	Demonstrated high level oral and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively, collaboratively, and productively with staff and students from a diverse range of backgrounds.
	Proven experience and success in managing academic staff performance and development.
