Basic information and contact details for the University of West Bohemia

institution

Founded in 1991, the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen, Czech Republic, is the result of the unification of the College of Mechanical and Electric Engineering and the Faculty of Education in Pilsen - both set up at the end of the 1940s.

Alongside education and engineering, the university teaches a broad range of subjects including applied sciences, design and art, economics, philosophy and arts, law and public administration, languages, health care and technology. Recently, the institution increased its research in education, economics, law, philosophy and arts.

Students who do technical courses can apply for the Annual Emild Skoda Award for their Diploma or PhD, as part of a collaboration between the University of West Bohemia and Skoda Holding. Since 1996, the higher level institution has also run the Science and Technology Park in cooperation with the Business Innovation Centre Pizen Company.

International students can join courses in English or Czech.

Pilsen is a scenic city famous for its Pilsner Urquell Brewery which has been in place since 1842. You can visit the brewing cellars as well as the city’s other attractions such as the nineteenth century Great Synagogue - which regularly hosts concerts - and the sixteenth century St Bartholomew Cathedral.

Together with the city of Pilsen, the university also organises the Pilsen Days of Science and Engineering on an annual basis. Among the university’s notable alumni are politicians Karla Slechtova and Jiri Pospisil,  poet, writer, and actor Milan Chovanec, and academic Milan Kohout.
