 Description The San Diego State University (SDSU) Department of Finance in the Fowler College of Business seeks to hire a tenure-track faculty member (Assistant Professor) who has a research and teaching interest in Corporate Finance with an emphasis on Entrepreneurial Finance to begin in Fall 2025. This position is contingent upon state funding.Qualifications Qualified applicants will hold a doctorate (Ph.D.) in Finance or in a related field by August 2025. The successful candidate will possess strong research interest and capability as evidenced by an appropriate history of, or potential for, professional growth activity. This will include regular publication in high-quality, refereed journals and professional conference participation as well as demonstration of an innovative and active research agenda. Teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate levels is preferred. Candidates will also be expected to demonstrate an ability to interact effectively with members of the business community.The SDSU Fowler College of Business is among the nation's oldest and largest AACSB accredited business schools. POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER

in the Research Council of Finland funded Academy Research Fellow project Metaphysics, Ethics, and Epistemology of Risk for a fixed term period for the duration of 2 years, starting date flexible.

PROJECT

Risk judgments play a pivotal role in human societies. By acting in the world we inevitably take risks and impose them on others. Risk is connected to normative practices. For instance, whether a war against a state suspected of sponsoring terrorism is morally justified depends in part on whether it minimizes the risk of future terrorist attacks. It is often proper to blame someone for imposing unnecessary risks on us, such as transporting hazardous materials without taking proper safety measures. Plausibly, whether one knows a proposition depends on how high the risk of forming a false belief is. But what exactly is risk, and why is it of normative significance?

In the research project ‘Metaphysics, Ethics, and Epistemology of Risk’ new insights about how we should understand risk are applied to a wide range of ethical and epistemological questions. The postdoctoral researcher’s work is expected to focus on ethical questions where the notion of risk can be utilized, such as ‘what ought we do under conditions of moral uncertainty?’, ‘does the risk value of a given event increase with its disutility?’, ‘should we be concerned about farfetched events which have catastrophic consequences?’, ‘can the kind of accidentality that is incompatible with morally worthy action be understood in terms of risk?’, and, ‘can we harm others merely by imposing risks on them?’

The project team consists of the PI (Jaakko Hirvelä), whose work will focus on the metaphysics and epistemology of risk, and the postdoctoral researcher, who is expected to work on ethical questions related to risk. The project runs in tandem with another research project on risk (‘The Structure and Nature of Risk’, PI Jaakko Hirvelä), which houses an additional postdoctoral researcher working on the philosophy of risk. The project team will conduct research into the nature of risk, and apply philosophical theories of risk to epistemological and ethical issues. The primary methods of the research project are philosophical analysis and model-building.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The main task of the appointed researcher is to conduct research into ethical issues where the notion of risk plays an essential role. The postdoctoral researcher is expected to participate in weekly project meetings, and in the general research seminars held by the philosophy unit in Helsinki. The postdoctoral researcher will help organizing conferences and workshops.
In addition, the postdoctoral researcher will actively contribute to teaching and administrative tasks in the discipline of Practical Philosophy at the University of Helsinki (up to 5% of their working time annually), and assist in preparing new research proposals. It is possible to complete the teaching and administrative tasks through English.

QUALIFICATIONS  

An appointee to the position must hold a doctoral degree in philosophy, and have relevant specialization in either ethics, metaethics, epistemology, or metaphysics. The default assumption is that the doctoral degree requirement must be met by the beginning of the employment. Applicants must have strong philosophical writing skills and excellent command of written and spoken English.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The successful applicant is expected to be an internationally oriented researcher who, in addition to their own area of expertise, is also familiar with other research approaches in English literatures. We are looking for a versatile literary scholar who possesses skills that align with the University's strategy as well as the priorities of the Faculty of Arts and the Department of Languages. Research in English literatures at the University of Helsinki covers the entire field from early modern literature to contemporary literature, including English-language world literature. Research approaches represented include narrative approaches, cognitive research, and literary history.

The assistant professor/associate professor/professor of English Literatures conducts and supervises scientific research and provides instruction in the field within the Bachelor's programme in languages and the Master's programme in English studies. Together with other teachers in the field, they are responsible for English literature studies. The successful applicant must be able to provide instruction based on their own research, supervise theses, dissertations, and postdoctoral researchers, lead research projects, and keep up with developments in the field. Duties also include administrative responsibilities and societal interaction. The assistant professor/associate professor/professor is also expected to take part in teaching within other Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes by providing, for example, joint instruction in literary studies across different degree programmes. In this collaboration, the assistant professor/associate professor/professor takes into consideration the broader role of literature and literary texts in the textual and media world, as well as the connections between fiction and non-fiction.

APPOINTMENT CRITERIA

An appointee to the position of assistant professor or associate professor must hold a doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, the appointee must have the ability and motivation to pursue an academic career, as demonstrated by publications and other means.

An appointee to a professorship must hold a doctoral degree and possess top-level scholarly qualifications and experience in the supervision of scholarly research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses. In addition, the appointee must present documentation of international cooperation in the research field they represent. They must also have academic leadership skills.

When assessing applicants’ qualifications, attention will be paid to both scholarly and teaching qualifications. Scholarly qualifications include scholarly publications and other research results of scholarly value, success in obtaining external research funding, scholarly work outside Finland and international elected positions. Teaching qualifications include teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration, as well as participation in doctoral education. Furthermore, consideration will be given to applicants’ leadership and interaction skills, as well as their active participation in the research community and public engagement.

Pursuant to the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009), appointees to teaching and research positions at the University must be proficient in the language in which they provide instruction, i.e., Finnish or Swedish. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have excellent skills in English. If the successful applicant is not proficient in Finnish, they will be expected to acquire sufficient proficiency within a reasonable period of time. SALARY

The salary will be based on levels 7 (assistant/associate professor) or 8–10 (professor) of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance. The annual salary of an assistant or associate professor is approximately €55,000–68,500, while that of a professor is approximately €66,500–99,000, depending on the previous experience and qualifications of the appointee. The position includes a six-month trial period.
