The Department of Arts and Design in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites qualified Design Theorist or Design Historian from around the world for the position of Associate/Assistant Professor of Design Theory and History. The newly formed Department of Arts and Design at the University of Macau consists of a team of prestigious art historians, practicing artists, as well as designers and design theorists, and hence emphasizes equally on academic research, artistic creation and design innovation. In line with Macao's special position in the world, the department encourages faculty members to engage in active artistic, design and academic pursuits that cut across the boundaries between the traditional and the contemporary, between China and the world, as well as between theory and practice.

Qualifications

Applicants must possess a Doctoral degree in Design, Art History or related areas, have both design academic research capability and rich curatorial practical experience. Candidates with experience in supervising doctoral and master’s students for their theses and dissertations are preferred. Proficiency in English. Preference will be given to those with theoretical qualities in contemporary technology philosophy, critical thinking, interdisciplinary academic research skills, and significant industry achievements.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty as early as June 2025.

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP1,052,800 (approx. USD129,980) for the position of Associate Professor and MOP855,400 (approximately USD105,600) for the position of Assistant Professor will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% – 7% after various discretionary exemptions. Applications are invited for appointment as Post-doctoral Fellow (PDF) / Senior Research Assistant (SRA) in the Sau Po Centre on Ageing within the Faculty of Social Sciences (Ref.:530632) to commence as soon as possible, on a two-year temporary basis for PDF, or on a three-year fixed-term basis for SRA, with the possibility of renewal subject to funding availability and satisfactory performance.

Applicants for Post Doctoral Fellow should possess a PhD degree or equivalent in Social Science, Psychology, Public Health or other related disciplines with at least 2 years of post-bachelor's work experience. Applicants for Senior Research Assistant should possess a Master’s degree or above in Gerontology, Psychology, Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Statistics, or a related discipline with at least 3-year post-qualification experience, preferably with clinical/therapy professional training with membership/registration of relevant professional bodies in Hong Kong or overseas. Previous work experience in big data analysis and developing and managing territory-wide projects in collaboration with community partners, is highly desirable. Applicants with experience in managing large databases of research projects relating to family caregivers of older adults and/or cost effectiveness evaluation, and with related track records of academic publication are preferred.  They should have a good command of written and spoken English and Chinese (fluency in Cantonese would be an advantage), advanced knowledge and experience with statistical software (e.g., SPSS, R, Stata) and MS Office applications (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.), and good interpersonal and organizational skills.

The appointees will work in a multidisciplinary team with local and international experts to conduct high-impact research related to family caregivers of older adults and/or gerontechnology, and will be responsible for data management, advanced data analysis, and performing other duties as assigned. Publication opportunities and professional development support are available.
