The Department of Information and Communications Engineering is looking for outstanding Postdoctoral Researcher in Distributed Machine Learning and Optimization for Multi-Agent Wireless Networks.

Are you a highly motivated researcher with a strong mathematical background in distributed optimization and machine learning? Do you want to develop novel distributed learning algorithms for multi-agent wireless networks that address key challenges such as privacy, resource constraints, and adversarial robustness? If so, we invite you to apply for a two-year postdoctoral position at the Department of Information and Communications Engineering (DICE), Aalto University, Helsinki, Finland.

The position is part of the project PLEDGE: Personalized Online Learning on the Edge in IoT/CPS, funded by the Research Council of Finland (2023-2027).

About the Project

The PLEDGE project develops theoretical foundations and algorithms for distributed and federated learning in large-scale, multi-agent networks, such as the internet of things (IoT) and cyber-physical systems (CPS). These systems require scalable and efficient learning methods that can function under limited communication, computation, and energy constraints while ensuring privacy and security from adversarial manipulation. The project focuses on decentralized optimization techniques that can accommodate heterogeneous and intermittent data availability, addressing challenges such as asynchronous updates, Byzantine resilience, and privacy-aware learning mechanisms, including differential privacy and secure aggregation.

The research focuses on theoretical advancements, emphasizing algorithmic analysis, convergence guarantees, and mathematical models for distributed learning. While the primary focus is on developing rigorous optimization frameworks, methods will also be applied to real-world scenarios relevant to IoT and wireless networks. The project involves international collaboration with leading institutions, offering opportunities for research visits and joint projects.

Your role and goals

As a postdoctoral researcher in PLEDGE, you will work at the intersection of distributed learning, optimization, and wireless systems, focusing on developing efficient decentralized learning algorithms. Your research will involve designing scalable optimization methods that ensure robust performance under communication and computational resources constraints. A major focus will be developing theoretical foundations for federated and decentralized learning, including the mathematical analysis of privacy-preserving mechanisms and adversarial robustness. The position provides an opportunity to contribute to the fundamental understanding of decentralized decision-making and optimization in multi-agent environments, emphasizing provable guarantees and rigorous analysis.

The role will require independent research and collaboration with faculty and Ph.D. students at Aalto University and international partners. While the research is largely theoretical, concepts relevant to distributed and edge-based learning in wireless networks will be evaluated in practical settings.

Your experience and ambition

We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled researcher with a strong background in optimization, machine learning, and distributed algorithms. Candidates should have expertise in mathematical optimization, statistical learning, or decentralized computation, with a demonstrated ability to develop and analyze provable guarantees for distributed learning methods. A Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field, along with a strong track record of high-quality research, is required.

Your expertise should be demonstrated through high-impact publications, including at least one IEEE Transactions paper or an equivalent publication in a top-tier ML venue such as ICML, NeurIPS, or ICLR. A solid foundation in mathematical modeling, algorithmic analysis, and privacy-preserving methods is expected. Strong programming and numerical optimization skills and fluency in written and spoken English are essential. A proactive and collaborative attitude and excellent communication skills will be key to successfully contributing to the research team.

In summary, the ideal candidate has:


	A Ph.D. degree in Information and Communications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field.
	A strong research background with expertise in at least one or more of the following areas: mathematical optimization, statistical machine learning, distributed machine learning, or applied mathematics.
	A proven track record of academic excellence demonstrated through high-quality research publications, including at least one IEEE Transactions paper or an equivalent publication in a top-tier ML venue.
	Strong mathematical and programming skills, with experience in numerical optimization and algorithm development.
	A collaborative and proactive attitude, with excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
	Fluency in written and spoken English.

Aalto University

Vietnam

The Vietnamese-German University (VGU) is seeking a highly qualified full-time lecturer in Building Physics. Candidates must hold at least a Master's degree (but having a PhD is a significant advantage) in Architecture with strong expertise in Building Climatology or a closely related field and have a strong background in research. Relevant international experience is of advantage. The successful candidate will become part of an international network of universities and research institutes.

Teaching Responsibilities

In the role of a lecturer, the successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in the Architecture Program (ARC). The expected workload for the in-class lecture conduction is 08 academic hours per week, totaling 240 academic hours per year (1 academic hour equals to 45 minutes).

Teaching should reflect current research methods and results, and comprises lectures on the following modules:


	Building Climatology I
	Building Climatology II
	Studio Project I
	Elective I


The named courses are subject to change upon realistic needs of the programs and joint agreement between the lecturer, relevant Academic Coordinators, and Dean/Vice Dean in charge of teaching. Courses may require conducting relevant laboratory activities and/or advising student projects.

The holder of this job is also responsible for supervising bachelor’s theses in the Architecture field.

Research Responsibilities

As a faculty member of a research-oriented university, the successful candidate is expected to significantly contribute to the scientific profile of VGU through innovation. This includes and is not limited to comprehensive activities in basic research as well as applied research in the fields of Building Physics in Architecture. The ability to apply and generate externally funded research projects is highly desirable.

Administrative responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the development of the Architecture Program by participating in administrative, marketing and other public activities of the program in consultation with the Academic Coordinator of the study program and the German partner university, namely Anhalt University of Applied Sciences. She or he is also expected to contribute actively to the academic self-administration of the Faculty of Engineering and university by being willing to stand for election to the Faculty Council, Academic Senate and/or other bodies.

Qualification

Candidates must at least hold a Master's degree (having a PhD is a significant advantage) in Architecture or a closely related field, preferably from a well-known international university. A current title of Professor will be a plus, as experience and understanding of the German higher education system and methodology. Other requirements include:


	Must have an architectural design portfolio to show working experience in the field
	An outstanding academic record with a focus on Building Physics in Architecture or other areas closely related to it
	Experience in the industry is required
	Record of successful research activities and publications in international and peer-reviewed journals in the related area is an advantage
	Proven teaching experience with strong self-motivation combined with a passion for teaching and research
	Proven excellent English proficiency:


Candidates who are from non-native English-speaking countries should include one of the following valid English proficiency certificates; IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 548(PBT), TOEFL 84 (iBT), TOEFL 212 (CBT), CEFR level B2 or Aptis level C1 at the time of application submission. Alternatively, candidates who do not hold a valid English proficiency certificate at the submission time need to be internally assessed at VGU to meet the criterion stated above.1

The School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (EME) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Researcher (Atomic, Molecular, and Optical Physics & Photonic Integrated Circuits).  Working in the Precision Measurement Group, you will work with a team towards using photonic integrated circuit light sources to reduce the size, weight, and power of state-of-the-art optical clocks with the aim to create a new class of integrated optical clocks on a single optical chip. 

This position is suitable for anyone with a PhD or an equivalent degree in physics, electrical and electronic engineering, or a related discipline. The successful candidate will work as part of the Precision Measurement Group at the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS) within the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (EME) to make significant contributions to the miniaturisation of high-precision optical clocks using photonic chip technology by:


	Exploring narrow linewidth chip scale laser light sources for probing and locking to atomic transitions.
	Exploring the use of stabilised microcombs that reach down to the atomic transition wavelengths for the direct readout of the clock signal.
	Characterising the optical clock when using the above mentioned and demonstrated narrow linewidth chip scale laser light sources and stabilised microcombs.


The successful candidate is expected to work on these specific project aspects while gaining valuable research experience in a collaborative and dynamic environment.

The successful applicant will undertake both experimental work and theoretical studies. They will participate in and be supported by key institutions such as IPAS and the School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering.

Research Assistant Professor in Building Energy / Building Environment / Building Safety and Resilience (three posts) (Ref. 250207009)

The Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering (BEEE) contributes to PolyU’s world ranking of 14th for Architecture and Built Environment as well as Civil and Structural Engineering in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024. BEEE is one of the constituent departments of the Faculty of Construction and Environment, and offers a full range of programmes leading to the awards of Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy, Master of Engineering, Master of Science and Bachelor of Engineering. Currently there are 35 research staff and 121 research students (118 studying for PhD), over 600 full-time / part-time Master’s students, an undergraduate student body of over 250 full-time students. BEEE currently has over 40 full-time academic / teaching staff members engaging in a wide range of research activities organised in the following three themes:

Building Energy: Energy issues in buildings addressed in the context of both demand and supply to improve sustainability of the built environment.

Building Environment: Optimisation of buildings and built environments for thermal comfort, indoor air quality, visual / spatial and vibration / acoustic aspects to improve occupant health and productivity.

Building Safety and Resilience: Protection of building occupants from hazards such as fire and lightning to improve safety and resilience of communities, buildings and built environments.

The Department is looking for internationally excellent candidate in our research theme of Building Energy / Building Environment / Building Safety and Resilience.

Duties

The appointees will be required to:

(a)    initiate, lead and participate in scholarly research in his/her area of expertise and be active in research leading to quality journal publications and in bidding for external research grants and applied research projects;

(b)   conduct research in related areas and contribute to the development of the Department’s research strength;

(c)    undertake teaching duties at various levels;

(d)    provide leadership in developing a programme, a subject discipline or a research programme, etc.;

(e)    undertake relevant administrative duties; and

(f)    perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department or his/her delegates.

Qualifications

Applicants should:

(a)    have a PhD degree in an appropriate related discipline;

(b)   preferably have at least two years of relevant postdoctoral research experience (as supported by evidence of research projects and outputs) with teaching experience in related disciplines and subjects being a definite advantage;

(c)    have an outstanding publication record in referred journals, and demonstrate good potential in bidding for research grants as well as in establishing significant externally funded research programmes;

(d)    have strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research;

(e)    be able to demonstrate effective classroom teaching skills and have good interpersonal skills; and

(f)    have an excellent command of English.

The applicants should demonstrate strong potential to be internationally prominent through a track record of excellent research in the area of Building Energy / Building Environment / Building Safety and Resilience. They should contribute to the development and delivery of degree programmes; should demonstrate the ability to teach in engineering design relevant to their technical specialisation; and should have been involved in major research projects.

Applicants should be able to conduct research and teach subjects related to Building Energy / Building Environment / Building Safety and Resilience.

Conditions of Service

A highly competitive package including a medical benefits plan and a gratuity payable upon completion of the term which is normally for two to three years initially, with possibility of extension.
