The University of Ruhuna is southern Sri Lanka’s only university, located in the Matara area. It was established in 1978 as a college, and became a university in 1984. The university’s central campus is located in Wellamadama, with periphery campuses in Kamburupitiya and Galle.
Across the university there are 10 faculties: agriculture, allied health science, engineering, fisheries and marine sciences and technology, graduate studies, humanities and social sciences, management and finance, medicine, science and technology. Across these faculties, undergraduate degree programs are offered, as well as master’s and doctorate degree programmes, diploma and certificate courses.
The main campus is bordered by the sea and paddy fields, with close proximity to Dondara, Sri Lanka’s southern tip.
With a range of student clubs and societies, the University of Ruhuna offers students many opportunities for extracurricular activities outside of their studies. Clubs and societies include toastmasters gavel club, butterfly research, and the botanical society.
