Helsinki Institute of Physics HIP participates in the CMS and ALICE experiments at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN CMS is a general-purpose experiment that had an essential contribution to the Nobel Prize-winning discovery of the Higgs Boson in 2012. The goal is to investigate a wide range of physics including the properties of the Higgs boson and search for BSM physics e.g. dark matter particles. ALICE is the dedicated heavy ion experiment with a versatile proton-proton (pp) physics program. In lead-lead collisions, ALICE studies properties of the quark-gluon plasma, mimicking the conditions of the early universe, whereas the pp program is strongly motivated by open questions in the theory of strong interactions. Both experiments undergo currently through a series of upgrades to prepare them for the upcoming High Luminosity LHC phase.

Directly related to the upgrade activities of these two experiments, the Helsinki Institute of Physics is searching for a:

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER for a fixed period of 2,5 years starting as early as possible or as agreed.  The work will be carried out within the CMS Upgrade Project at the Helsinki office of the institute.

The main part of the work will focus on the following tasks:


	Extensive quality control of the silicon pixel detector modules for the CMS inner tracking detector and the ALICE FoCal detector,
	data processing and communication of results within the experimental collaborations.


In addition, the postdoctoral researcher is expected to actively take part in detector R&D and teaching activities at our institute.  Currently active detector R&D projects at the institute focus on pixelized semiconductor detectors for high energetic X- and gamma-ray detection used in medical imaging dosimetry and nuclear safety systems. Other projects concern development of radiation hard tracking detectors and ultra-thin silicon drift detectors.

The person selected for the position must have a doctoral degree in particle or nuclear physics or in an equivalent natural science field. In addition, the candidate must be familiar with the principles of radiation-matter interactions. Strong assets are hands-on experience in working and developing of ionizing radiation detectors. Profound knowledge of simulation tools such as TCAD, Geant4, MCNP, etc, is desirable. The position requires the ability to work independently in an international environment and fluent command of the English language. Especially important are careful and conscientious working standards and the ability to work in teams. The candidate must also be able to travel within Europe.

Our school

The School of Engineering is one of the most research-intensive Schools within the University. The School offers Engineering degree programs in Aerospace Systems, Chemical, Civil, Computer Systems, Electrical and Electronic, Environmental, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Medical, and, Renewable Energy as well as degree programs in Surveying and Geospatial Engineering. The School of Engineering is seeking to appoint a Lecturer specialising in Mechatronics Engineering, undertaking research into priority areas including energy-based modelling and control. As the degree program is focussed on Autonomous Systems, the successful applicant will teach from a model-based control systems perspective. You will also have the opportunity to support the NU Marine team (as part of the international RobotX competition) and create and evolve ongoing collaborative relationships with local and international Mechatronics industries, including industries operating in the Williamtown RAAF airbase precinct.

How will you inspire us

The successful candidates will have:


	A PhD in Mechatronics Engineering or related field with a strong background in analytical mechanics and energy-based control methods.
	Demonstrated record of high-quality contribution to research, including evidence of international and national research and industry collaborations/partnerships.
	Demonstrated recent record of successfully taking a chief investigator role (often in conjunction with more experienced researchers) in funding initiatives and obtaining, competitive, external research funding including industry funded research.
	Demonstrated recent active supervision of honours and masters research projects as well as Higher Degree by Research students.
	Demonstrated recent ability to contribute to teaching at undergraduate and honours levels, taking responsibility for the preparation and delivery of course modules. Specialist areas of teaching for this role include analytical mechanics and energy-based control methods.
	Demonstrated recent ability to efficiently perform in allocated internal roles, sharing academic service responsibilities, contributing to outcomes of internal committees, and beginning to develop external collaborations.
	 Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including an inter-disciplinary way of working, capacity to build relationships and engagement with industry stakeholders.

About Us

The Centre for Human & Applied Physiological Sciences (CHAPS) is situated within the School of Basic & Medical Biosciences (within the Faculty of Life Sciences and Medicine), which is led by Professor Mathias Gautel and comprises five departments with a wide range of expertise and interests. Using a bench to bedside approach, the School aims to answer fundamental questions about biology in health and disease and apply this knowledge to the development of new and innovative clinical practise, alongside providing a rigorous academic programme for students.

About the role

CHAPS is seeking dynamic individuals for the role of lecturer in Human Physiology. This department has a focus on fundamental questions regarding human physiological function and adaptation in health and disease and occupies an important nexus between basic biomedical sciences, clinical and applied research.  It comprises four interlinking research groupings operating under an overarching strategy focused on furthering understanding of integrative human physiology.

 

Our research encompasses a unique ‘whole-body systems’ through to stem cell approaches which is aimed at gaining insight into factors affecting human health, disease, biological ageing and exercise, as well as performance in unique and extreme environments. We are committed to integrative and translational research which is facilitated by collaborations with other research groupings within King’s College London, King’s Health Partners, industry and the military.

 

The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching of both undergraduates and postgraduates alongside contributing to the innovative scientific research within the centre. The post holder will be embedded in a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative research environment, where 75% of research is rated 4* (world leading; UoA24 REF2021). The appointee will join an interactive group of investigators with expertise across a whole range of research groupings: Aerospace & Environmental Physiology & Medicine, Respiratory Physiology & Medicine, Skeletal and Cardiac Muscle: Form & Function and Neural Control of Human Movement. Our department is responsible for the delivery of post graduate programmes in Human & Applied Physiology (MSc), Aerospace Medicine (Diploma/MSc) and Sport & Exercise Medical Sciences (BSc).

 

Applications from individuals with research strengths in aerospace and environmental physiology are particularly welcome, as are those in the fields of cardiovascular and respiratory physiology.

 

This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.
