The University of Qom originated in 1980 as the High Educational and Legal School of the Seminarians of Qom. In 1997, it attained full university status and became the University of Qom.

Located in Qom, a city in Iran's Central District of Qom County, Qom is approximately 140km south of Tehran and is known for its status as a major pilgrimage destination, attracting around 20 million pilgrims annually.

The university comprises six faculties, encompassing engineering, basic sciences, management and economics, literature and humanities, law, theology, and Islamic studies, offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programmes.

Notable alumni include Ammar Al-Hakim, Dhiyaa Al-Musawi, and Mansour Leghaei. The university is active in research, hosting seven research and technology centres.
