The University of Oviedo, based in Asturias, Spain is the only university in the region, and it has three campus and research centres in Oviedo, Gijón and Mieres.

Established in 1608, the university is one of the oldest in Spain and provides a wide educational offer across a variety of branches, which include: arts and humanities, sciences, health sciences, social and legal sciences and engineering and architecture. 

In 2009, the university became one of the first Spanish universities to obtain the seal “Campus of International Excellence” which promoted collaboration agreements with other universities across the world in Europe, China and Latin America. 

Asturias has a beautiful natural landscape, a rich artistic heritage and excellent road and rail to its major cities making it ideal for students. Approximately a third of the area is listed as protected natural areas of special interest including the UNESCO "Biosphere Reserve" distinction, the Comarca Oscos-Eo Shire and the Tierras de Burón, the Picos de Europa National Park. 

The area boasts some 200 beaches which provides an undeniable attraction for both its inhabitants and tourists. 

The University of Oviedo is committed to transforming its campus to be environmentally friendly, guided by principles of sustainability. All campuses offer vast facilities for teaching and carrying out research work, libraries, computer labs, WiFi access in open spaces with green areas and good road and rail links. 

The university often hosts congresses, conferences, concerts and exhibitions drawing in students and visitors alike every year. 

Notable alumni include Alejandro Fernández Sordo, lawyer and politician, Gil Carlos Rodríguez Iglesias, former judge at the European Court of Justice, and novelist Gonzalo Torrente Ballester.
