About University of Massachusetts Amherst - Mount Ida Campus
Mount Ida College is a small, private institution in Newton, Massachusetts, on the fringes of Boston. It was originally located on Mount Ida hill when it opened in 1899 as a girls’ high school. It later transitioned to become a college and gained accreditation to award degrees. The school has been coeducational since the 1970s, when numerous Vietnam veterans enrolled.
There are four schools at Mount Ida: Applied Science, Design, Business and Social Science and Humanities. The School of Design is perhaps the best known, as are courses in veterinary science, biology and dental hygiene. The college’s experiential learning focus gives its students high employment prospects, with almost 100% employment rates in some majors.
Graduate students can take a Master’s of Science in Management, with a core curriculum of strategy and the option to specialise in healthcare, interior architecture, sports leadership, general management or human resources.
The college faculty includes professionals from a range of industries, letting students tap into their real world experience.
Mount Ida’s athletics teams, the Mustangs, play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III in sports including soccer, cross country, lacrosse and women’s field hockey. All students have the opportunity to take part in intramural competitions and fitness classes.
The campus is a safe, suburban 72-acre area with its own fitness centre, state-of-the-art biology and chemistry laboratories and dental clinic community. At the centre of campus is the 100-year-old Shaw Hall. The college runs a shuttle bus for students wanting to travel between Newton and Boston by public transport.
