The Department of Mathematics at King’s College London invites applications for 1 postdoctoral research associate position for a duration of 24 months starting in October 2025. 

The successful candidate will work on several projects related to many-body systems, with particular interest in the regime when they are inhomogeneous and out-of-equilibrium, and they are well described via hydrodynamics theories. They will be supported by EPSRC under grant UNIHYPE: Universal hydrodynamic principles and emergent physics, EP/Z534304/1 (assessed under the ERC Advanced Grant scheme). 

The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in theoretical/condensed matter physics, with knowledge of non-equilibrium many-body physics and some methods of integrability, and with some numerical skills. 

The post is offered at a competitive salary (Grade 6, Spine Point 33 on the KCL salary scale), and includes provisions for travel money, computing equipment, and academic and leadership training. 

This is a full-time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered on a fixed term contract, ending in September 2027.

About the position

Through a collaboration agreement between CERN and NorCC (Norwegian Centre for CERN-related Research), this position is one of a number of jointly-funded NTNU-CERN PhD vacancies in the field of the technological sciences (engineering projects). The successful candidate will spend 18 months at NTNU and 18 months at CERN, while remaining active in the PhD Programme at both institutions for the full 36 months. For the position of PhD Candidate, the goal is the completion of doctoral education at NTNU and CERN, including an obtained doctoral degree from NTNU.

A jointly-funded NTNU-CERN PhD vacancy is available at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics at NTNU on the topic of Model Predictive Control for Energy Optimization in Cooling and Ventilation Systems.

There has been considerable effort recently to reduce energy consumption at CERN, which currently stands at roughly 1.3 TWh per year.  One attractive means to achieve this, which typically also requires minimal capital expenditure, is to improve control algorithms.  At CERN, cooling and ventilation applications account for a considerable proportion of electrical consumption (in the order of 100 GWh per year). Improving control systems for these applications could therefore enable considerable energy savings.  A recent pilot implementation of Model Predictive Control (MPC) on an Air Handling Unit (AHU) at CERN has demonstrated promising results with respect to energy savings.  The focus of this project will be to investigate how MPC may be efficiently implemented for large numbers of similar installations.

Your immediate leader at CERN will be Dr. Brad Schofield, and at NTNU Prof. Morten Hovd.

Duties of the position


	Develop methodology for efficient roll-out of the piloted control methodology.  At CERN there is a large number of AHUs, of several different designs, and operating in different environments.
	Continue to develop energy-optimal advanced controllers for other process areas, in cooperation with the equipment groups.
	Be admitted to and, within the timeframe of the project, completing the requirements of the PhD programme in Engineering Cybernetics at NTNU 


Required qualifications


	You must have a Master’s degree or equivalent in Engineering Cybernetics or Control Engineering with a strong background in industrial control systems, or a Master’s degree in process technology (from Mechanical or Chemical Engineering) with a strong background in control and optimization.
	Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
	You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
	You must meet the requirements for admission to the NTNU PhD programme in Engineering Cybernetics.
	You must have good written and oral English language skills. Applicants from non-English speaking countries outside EU/EEA/Switzerland must provide documentation of English language proficiency, in terms of an approved test (such as TOEFL, IELTS, or similar).
	You must be a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.


The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

Salary and conditions at NTNU

General

The period of employment at NTNU is 18 months in total.  This may be split into two periods, starting with 12 months at NTNU, followed by 18 months at CERN, and finally 6 months at NTNU.  You will remain active in the PhD Programme at both institutions for the full 36 months. Your NTNU supervisor will assist you with your applications to the NTNU and the CERN PhD Program. A travel allowance is available when travel between NTNU and CERN is deemed appropriate by your supervisors.

Contract of employment at NTNU:

During the period(s) of employment at NTNU, you will have a contract of employment as a PhD candidate (code 1017). PhD Candidates are normally paid NOK 532 200 per annum before tax, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in Engineering Cybernetics within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. 

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution on a daily basis.

Contract of association at CERN:

During the 18-month period at CERN, you will have a contract of association and will be a member of the CERN Doctoral Students Programme, the conditions of which, including details of the monthly stipend, are described in CERN Doctoral Student Programme | SmartRecruiters. You will not be employed by NTNU during this time.

Description

Program Overview

The NYU Abu Dhabi Summer Academy is an 18-month university preparation program designed to enhance the academic profiles of highly motivated Emirati high school students. The program features intensive instruction in Leadership and Public Speaking, Critical Thinking and Writing, Mathematical Reasoning for the Sciences, College Readiness and Success, and IELTS Preparation over the course of two summers and an intervening academic year. 

Following a competitive admissions process, up to 90 program participants are selected each year as recipients of the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Scholarships for Outstanding High School Students, which enables them to attend the Summer Academy.

In this mixed-gender program, students are exposed to a rich cultural and rigorous academic program which enhances their ability to gain admission to and perform well at top-tier English-language universities. The program begins during the summer following the 10th year of high school and continues for the following 18 months, with two intensive summer sessions of study in Abu Dhabi at the NYUAD Campus. In addition, students participate in online study and academic refresher weekends during the following academic year.

Students gain the academic, cultural, and social skills necessary for success at top-tier universities. Summer Academy graduates have attended Yale, NYU New York, NYU Abu Dhabi, Princeton, United Arab Emirates University, The London School of Economics, George Washington University, King’s College London, The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, and many others.

Academic Preparation

We introduce students to accelerated study of mathematics, critical thinking and writing, the humanities and to the value of a liberal arts education.

Cultural Awareness

Students develop their understanding of the social and cultural norms of universities and build useful intercultural competencies for success in university.

Test Preparation

We prepare students to excel on the standardized tests necessary for university entry.

Leadership and Public Speaking Skills

With Leadership and Public Speaking as a required course in the Summer Academy,  our program spurs confidence, personal growth, maturity, and leadership skills.

Social Networking

We bring together top students from across the UAE who form a supportive and challenging social network among themselves and with Summer Academy alumni who have gone on to university study, graduate school, professions, and leadership careers.

Job Summary

The Instructor will oversee all academic duties for teaching the Mathematical Reasoning for the Sciences (MTH) course, including lesson planning, instruction, grading, feedback, and office hours for two sections of Summer Academy students - students in their first summer of the program and students in their second summer of the program (Summer I and Summer II).

The course will involve approximately 37 contact hours, with exact hours determined during the hiring process by early Spring 2024.The Instructor will also support programmatic activities throughout the length of the appointment (including weekends) and participate in selection activities and graduation events as needed.

Principal Responsibilities

The job’s activities in terms that enable someone who knows nothing about the job to understand what is done in each activity.


	Teach the MTH course to two sections - the Classes of 2025 (Summer II) and 2026 (Summer I) in Abu Dhabi
	Work within the existing MTH curriculum, which is focused on math foundations for the sciences. Areas of study include: algebra & functions, system of equations & vectors, Geometry & Trigonometry, introductory probability and statistics, Logic & paradoxes, test practice and other advanced math topics as needed.
	Attend any pre-program meetings and/or training sessions
	Work closely with the other MTH instructor(s) to ensure that both cohorts and all sections receive the same material delivered with a similar high-quality approach
	Supervise and coordinate instruction with teaching assistants(s)
	Be available to individual students and groups in need of assistance, as well as to other instructors undertaking cross-curricular or collaborative projects
	Provide students with ongoing and regular feedback (oral and written) during the course 
	Participate in faculty meetings by providing detailed feedback on student progress 
	Following the summer session, submit extensive and detailed written feedback on each student to be used in crafting letters of recommendation for their college applications (within 30 days)
	Attend and provide assistance as needed with co-curricular events and activities throughout the summer session, which will entail leading small groups of students on excursions and trips, or supporting the operations of the program as needed
	Oversee and support students during assigned day trips, extracurricular activities, and events, ensuring a safe and engaging environment that promotes learning and development

About the opportunity

The University's Governance Office (UGO) is in an exciting period of development, striving to deliver a contemporary and integrated service offering aligned with the University's strategic objectives. As a result, we are seeking an experienced Business Program Manager to provide overall management of the Privacy Resilience Program (PRP). This is a high-profile remediation program which is aimed at reducing the University's significant risk exposure in relation to management of sensitive personal information.
This is a unique opportunity to work closely with the Manager, Privacy, and to play a strategic role overseeing and directing the program of work. Leading a team of program specialists, you will work with senior representatives of impacted areas to ensure appropriate focus and buy-in towards addressing risks within their area, in relation to privacy and data collection practices.

Your key responsibilities will be to:


	work with the business owner to manage the overall approach and work plans to ensure achievement of the program outcomes
	ensure senior leaders have a strong understanding of their compliance obligations in relation to data collection and privacy matters, within their respective work areas
	collaborate with and influence senior stakeholders across the various portfolios, faculties and schools and research centres, to provide recommendations and support towards implementation activities within their local areas
