Basic information and contact details for TU Braunschweig

institution

Technische Universitat (TU) Braunschweig is a public university situated in the Lower Saxony city of Braunschweig in Germany.

Originally known as Collegium Carolinum, it was established in 1745 as a mid-way institution between high school and university, teaching technical and mathematical subjects as well as fine arts and humanities. After various name changes, namely to the Polytechnic School in 1862, then to the Herzogliche Technische Hochschule Carolo-Wilhelmina (TH) in 1878, the university settled on its current name in 1968.

TU Braunschweig is both one of the oldest and largest technical institutes in Germany, and it belongs to the TU9 Association of the largest and most renowned German technical institutes. The campus is situated in Braunschweig's inner city region and comprises 200 buildings over four separate sites.

Within the institute there are six faculties: the Carl Friedrich Faculty, which is divided into the mathematics, computer science, and business administration and economics departments; life sciences; mechanical engineering; architecture, civil engineering and environmental sciences; humanities and educational sciences; and electrical engineering, information technology and physics.

The motto of the TU's founders is "nec aspera terrent" which roughly translates as "adversaries shall not deter us", which the institute adheres to to this day by focusing on problem solving and striving to provide the very best technical teaching methods.

TU Braunschweig has a large roster of notable alumni, including: famous mathematician Carl Friedrich, after whom one of the institute's faculties is named; Nobel Prize winning physicist Klaus von Klitzing; journalist, author and TV presenter Nina Ruge; fashion designer Wolfgang Joop; and Governor of Jakarta, Fauzi Bowo.
