About us

We are seeking to recruit an organised, reliable and enthusiastic qualitative researcher with expertise in sociology or another relevant social science discipline to work on our ESRC-funded project, ‘Young Lives, Young Futures’. This is a longitudinal mixed methods study investigating how England’s education and training system can better support the transitions into further education and work of the 50 per cent of young people who don’t go to university.

The research is focussed on the 15-20 age group and has a particular emphasis on engaging with the perspectives of young people themselves, including those who are most marginalised and whose input is often not heard in policymaking. The post-holder will be based in the Centre for Public Policy Research, a friendly and vibrant research centre within the School of Education, Communication and Society in the Faculty of Social Science and Public Policy.

About the role

The successful candidate will work collaboratively as part of a larger research team. Their responsibilities will include: planning and organizing qualitative fieldwork; qualitative data collection and analysis; contributing to project publications; and co-leading the impact work with the young people. The latter will involve working in partnership with a human rights charity and professional film maker to support young people to reflect on the project data and their own experiences as a springboard for developing their self- and collective advocacy skills. The work may require some travel and overnight stays for fieldwork.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in sociology or another relevant discipline (e.g. anthropology, social geography, social policy), strong qualitative research skills and a strong interest in social justice. They will be able to show evidence of high quality academic writing, excellent written and spoken English, a commitment to working collaboratively with others inside and outside the university and substantial experience of grassroots work with diverse groups of young people, for example, in youth work or similar settings.

This is a part time post (14 hours per week), and you will be offered a fixed term contract until 30 September 2025.

About you

To be successful in this role, candidates will need to be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria


	PhD in sociology or other relevant discipline (e.g. anthropology, social geography, or social policy)
	Strong qualitative research skills including expertise in qualitative interviewing and qualitative data analysis using NVivo
	Evidence of high quality academic writing
	Strong communication skills, with excellent written and spoken English, including the ability to communicate effectively with young people, as well as professionals and practitioners from a range of agencies and organisations
	A proven capacity to reach out to and develop rapport with diverse groups of marginalised young people, for example in youth work or similar settings
	Strong organisational and administrative skills, including the ability to prioritise and multi-task and work effectively both as part of a team and independently
	A commitment to social justice and equality in relation to practice and to working collaboratively with colleagues and others inside and outside of the university. (This could be evidenced, for example, in previous research conducted, community activism and/or experience of implementing equality policies in a work setting.)
	Dedicated, hardworking, reliable and flexible (including a willingness to travel and stay overnight at hotels/B&Bs for fieldwork for short periods of time if necessary)


Desirable criteria


	Familiarity with debates relevant to the study, e.g. on young people’s education-to work-transitions, youth employment and unemployment, vocational education and training, careers support and guidance, intersectionality
	Experience of working on funded research projects
	Experience of facilitating activities and/or creating outputs that involve generating impact from research
	Experience of developing high-quality research-based publications

Qualifications

Applicants should possess PhD/MD degree in Pharmacy, Medicine, Biomedicine or related disciplines, postdoctoral research experience from globally renowned universities, and should have a distinguished track record of internationally-recognized research publications. Priority consideration will be given to those with sustained high-quality research/teaching experiences in social and administrative pharmacy, pharmacy administration, health services management, public health, data science, pharmaceutical science, Chinese medicinal science, or bioinformatics.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in 2025.

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP855,400 (approximately USD105,600) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% – 7% after various discretionary exemptions. The Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences is ambitiously pushing the boundaries of progressive thinking to solve some of the big issues of our time, on both a national and global scale. The Faculty forms part of MQ Health, an integrated academic health sciences enterprise which incorporates Macquarie University Hospital and primary and speciality clinics. We have active research programs and our Faculty hosts the Australian Institute of Health Innovation (AIHI), an internationally acclaimed powerhouse researching health systems, e-health and patient safety. The Institute draws from the expertise of over 320 staff, students and visiting personnel working on over 120 different projects at any given time, publishing more than one peer-reviewed publication on average per day.

The Centre for Healthcare Resilience and Implementation Science (CHRIS), within AIHI, has a multi-stream program of research which focuses on delivering health system improvement by working with patients, healthcare providers and policy makers. We are methodologically sophisticated, multidisciplinary and draw on assembled and collaborative expertise in areas including health systems, policy, medicine, nursing, psychology, anthropology, sociology and complexity science. Our research underpins new models of care, fashions improved services for patients, builds better policy, provides an evidence base to guide what people do, and transforms the systems through which care is delivered.

About the team

The National Paediatric Research Translation Initiative (N-PARTI) is an Australia-wide group of researchers, clinicians, and consumers that aims to improve the health of Australian children. It is a $5M, five-year project led by Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite at the AIHI, and involves collaborators from Perth Children's Hospital, Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service, Sydney Children's Hospital, and the University of New South Wales. Other collaborators, including Primary Healthcare Networks, will join during the implementation of the project.

N-PARTI aims to use implementation science in three priority areas, as exemplars, to improve primary care for child health: Asthma, Type 1 Diabetes, and Antibiotic overuse. N-PARTI will conduct a series of implementation research projects to increase the amount of care provided by general practitioners that is in line with best practice guidelines for these priority areas.

Central to N-PARTI is the effective implementation of interventions to increase uptake of evidence-based care guidelines that will significantly improve children's healthcare across the nation.

About the role

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher (Level A) or Research Fellow (Level B) with excellent mixed-methods research skills to work as the Mixed-Methods Researcher within the N-PARTI team, across all three priority areas. An understanding of the healthcare consumer and clinician context is key to effective implementation, so in the first two years of the position the Mixed-Methods Researcher will lead a range of studies to understand this context to help shape interventions, and to learn from the implementation process in pilot and demonstration programs. Subsequent research will be undertaken to understand the barriers and facilitators to intervention adoption, with fidelity, at scale.

The Mixed-Methods Researcher will work with expert advisory groups in each priority area, including consumer representatives, and when studying and implementing interventions, will work closely with participating Primary Healthcare Networks and General Practices. The Mixed-Methods Researcher will work with the project's Implementation Scientist to develop and integrate an understanding of the implementation context. They will also work with the project's Health Economist to ensure coverage of all relevant costs and benefits associated with program implementation. Appointment as Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Fellow will depend upon qualifications and experience.

	Experience in primary healthcare and/or experience in paediatric care, Type 1 Diabetes or responsible use of antibiotics
	Experience in preparing Ethics and Site governance applications
	Experience with successful research student supervision

The Riddet Institute is a world-best research centre in food and nutritional sciences, providing fundamental scientific understanding and training for a new generation of science leaders. The Institute integrates partner organisations (Massey University (host), Auckland and Otago Universities, AgResearch and Plant and Food Research) and disciplines, leading a "NZ Inc" approach to food research, and generates knowledge and capability that transforms the New Zealand food industry.

Located in Palmerston North, we are seeking a high-achieving, full-time (37.5h p/w) Research Officer to work on a Riddet Institute Centre of Research Excellence (CoRE) funded project in the field of precision fermentation and alternative proteins, including optimisation of strains and fermentation conditions, development of biomass recovery processes and scale-up.

The successful candidate will have completed a PhD in Biotechnology, Bioprocess Engineering, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Food Biotechnology or related disciplines with demonstrated expertise in fermentation/precision fermentation of heterotrophic microbes (microalgae, yeast, fungi, or bacteria). Knowledge of metabolic engineering for microbial strain improvement is desirable. They will also demonstrate effective communication and problem-solving techniques, as well as high motivation and enthusiasm to work with an interdisciplinary team in food biotechnology/sciences.

Appointable within the Research Officer range ($81,172 - $103,595 NZD), reflective of experience and publication, for a fixed-term period of four years to cover specific project deliverables in the current CoRE research programme which finishes in 2028.
