About

Basic information and contact details for Tallinn University

institution

One of the largest universities in Estonia, Tallinn University was formed in the capital city in 2005 by the merger of a number of institutions, of which the oldest was the Tallinn Teachers Institute, founded in 1919. Also included were the Academic Library, Institutes of Humanities and of History and the Film and Media School.

It is located on a city centre campus, between the harbour and Kadriorg Park, and also has affiliated regional colleges in Haapualu and Rakvere. The main campus buildings, of which the oldest, Terra, dates back to 1938, have Latin names. The newest, Vita, is due for completion in 2019. All university activities operate the "academic quarter", starting at 15 minutes past the hour.

While there is a school of natural science and health, the emphasis is on the humanities through schools of education, arts and communication, government, law and society, humanities and film and media. The school of digital technology supplies services and expertise across the whole university.

In 2018 there were 7,130 students including nearly 3,000 postgraduates, plus a further 12,226 on continuing education programmes. The film and media school claims to offer the widest range of English-language programmes in its disciplines in Northern Europe.

The Asian studies section of the school of humanities runs courses in Japanese, Chinese, Turkish, Arabic, Sanskrit, Korean and Persian, while the Institute of Population Studies is regarded as a national lead body. The university's digital technologists developed three serious games as partners in the Lean and Agile Practice linking Engineering Higher Education to Industry (LEAP) programme.
