The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network (MSCA-DN) "Magnetic Soft Matter for Robotics" (MAESTRI, Grant ID 101119614) is an interdisciplinary research training network involving 7 universities and 2 companies from 5 countries. It is funded under the "first pillar" of the Horizon Europe program called "Excellent Science". MSCA-DN MAESTRI addresses the need for training a new kind of expert in the emerging application field of magnetic soft robotics, which we believe will lead to groundbreaking technologies in the near future. It is an interdisciplinary collaboration among specialists from various fields, including Materials Science, Biology, Physics, and Engineering Science.

You will be working in the Dipolar Soft Matter group at the Faculty of Physics with the objective of developing robust and predictive simulation approaches that enable accurate magneto-mechanical coupling for modeling magnetic elastomers. The aim is to gain a fundamental understanding of the interplay between magnetic particle shape, concentration, embedding techniques, and the magneto-mechanical responses of elastomers.

As part of the Doctoral Network, you will actively collaborate with other nodes, particularly through secondments to Ostbayerische Technische Hochschule Regensburg to gain complementary expertise on materials for control design and experimentation, and to the University of Ljubljana to acquire expertise in materials characterization and optical feedback concepts. To gain exposure to the industrial implementation of magnetic elastomers, an extended stay at Prensilia — a spin-off company of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, with extensive experience in designing and developing multi-articulated grippers — is also planned.

Your future tasks:


	develop, implement, test and employ a coarse-grained, bead-spring-based approach to simulate both bulk and semi-finite samples of magnetic elastomers with predefined compressibility.
	perform extensive simulation, aiming at establishing the relationship between internal structure of the elastomer and its mechanical response with particular emphasis on the elastomer free surface deformation.
	Presentation of research activities at international conferences
	Publications of research papers

	Completed Master studies in physics or related disciplines (applied mathematics, physical chemistry or theoretical/computational chemistry)
	Knowledge of statistical physics and classical mechanics

About Us

The Faculty of Medicine, Health and Human Sciences is ambitiously pushing the boundaries of progressive thinking to solve some of the big issues of our time, on both a national and global scale. The Faculty forms part of MQ Health, an integrated academic health sciences enterprise which incorporates Macquarie University Hospital and primary and speciality clinics. The Centre for Healthcare Resilience and Implementation Science (CHRIS), within AIHI, has a multi-stream program of research which focuses on delivering health system improvement by working with patients, healthcare providers and policy makers. We are methodologically sophisticated, multidisciplinary and draw on assembled and collaborative expertise in areas including health systems, policy, medicine, nursing, psychology, anthropology, sociology and complexity science. Our research underpins new models of care, fashions improved services for patients, builds better policy, provides an evidence base to guide what people do, and transforms the systems through which care is delivered.

About the team

The National Paediatric Research Translation Initiative (N-PARTI) is an Australia-wide group of researchers, clinicians, and consumers that aims to improve the health of Australian children. It is a $5M, five-year project led by Professor Jeffrey Braithwaite at the AIHI, and involves collaborators from Perth Children's Hospital, Gold Coast Hospital and Health Service, Sydney Children's Hospital, and the University of New South Wales. Other collaborators, including Primary Healthcare Networks, will join during the implementation of the project.

N-PARTI aims to use implementation science in three priority areas, as exemplars, to improve primary care for child health: Asthma, Type 1 Diabetes, and Antibiotic overuse. N-PARTI will conduct a series of implementation research projects to increase the amount of care provided by general practitioners that is in line with best practice guidelines for these priority areas.

Central to N-PARTI is the effective implementation of interventions to increase uptake of evidence-based care guidelines that will significantly improve children's healthcare across the nation.

About the role

We are looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher (Level A) or Research Fellow (Level B) with excellent mixed-methods research skills to work as the Mixed-Methods Researcher within the N-PARTI team, across all three priority areas. An understanding of the healthcare consumer and clinician context is key to effective implementation, so in the first two years of the position the Mixed-Methods Researcher will lead a range of studies to understand this context to help shape interventions, and to learn from the implementation process in pilot and demonstration programs. Subsequent research will be undertaken to understand the barriers and facilitators to intervention adoption, with fidelity, at scale.

The Mixed-Methods Researcher will work with expert advisory groups in each priority area, including consumer representatives, and when studying and implementing interventions, will work closely with participating Primary Healthcare Networks and General Practices. The Mixed-Methods Researcher will work with the project's Implementation Scientist to develop and integrate an understanding of the implementation context. They will also work with the project's Health Economist to ensure coverage of all relevant costs and benefits associated with program implementation. Appointment as Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Fellow will depend upon qualifications and experience.

	A PhD in health services research or related discipline such as health or medicine, psychology or the social sciences
	Demonstrated understanding of the Australian health system, particularly of the Australian primary care system.
	Demonstrated ability to undertake qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis
	Demonstrated capacity coordinating large multi-institutional projects and working a part of interdisciplinary research teams
	Experience undertaking research involving consumers and/or clinicians
	An understanding of mixed-methods research in implementation science
	Demonstrated track record of peer reviewed publications of mixed-methods research in high quality journals
	Demonstrated highly developed communication skills both verbal and written
	Demonstrated capacity to present papers at conferences and workshops
	Demonstrated capacity to work with a range of stakeholders across healthcare including consumers, clinicians, managers and policy makers
	Capacity to contribute to the academic life and administrative duties of the Centre and Institute
	Capacity for and interest in interdisciplinary and multi-method research
	Capacity to travel to research sites, including interstate, for up to one week at a time.


Desirable criteria:


	Experience in primary healthcare and/or experience in paediatric care, Type 1 Diabetes or responsible use of antibiotics
	Experience in preparing Ethics and Site governance applications
	Experience with successful research student supervision

Based on our Hamilton campus you will produce research of a high standard in your specialist area of supply chain management or logistics, and actively communicate the impact of that research within the division and beyond.
