Our department

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) is one of the largest and most successful civil engineering departments in the UK. The department is ranked 1st in Scotland and 3rd in the UK in the Guardian Subject Rankings 2025. We have over 600 students, including 450 undergraduates, 100 taught postgraduates and almost 100 registered research students. We have a strong commitment to widening access and inclusion while maintaining academic quality and an outstanding student experience.

Civil and Environmental Engineering academics lead an active and growing portfolio of around £20M worth of research projects, the main funders of this research are UK Research and Innovation (£13.9M), National Institute for Health and Care Research (£3M) and Industry (£1.8M). We are a dynamic research-intensive department. Income from industry funded research has increased year on year and income from licensing, gains on sales of spinout/spin off investment, and consultancy has doubled over the last four years. We have 30 academic staff, 22 post-doctoral research staff and 66 PGR students.

The opportunity

The successful candidate will join our Centre for Intelligent Infrastructure (CII) which serves as the epicentre for transformative research in civil engineering, focusing on pioneering technologies that redefine the landscape of infrastructure development and management with strong emphasis on digital technologies for improving the environmental sustainability and climate resilience of new and existing infrastructure. At the heart of the university's strategy is a commitment to innovation and technological advancement, supported by priority areas of Social and Environmental Sustainability and Process, Systems and Digital. Structural health monitoring and intelligent systems represent some of the most prominent technology required to develop climate resilient infrastructures and maximise the sustainability of the built environment. The teaching fellow/lecturer, by advancing research in these areas, directly contributes to the university's reputation as a hub for cutting-edge technologies and innovative solutions to maximise social benefit and improve the sustainability of existing structures.

The opportunity

As a Teaching Assistant you will design and deliver a range of established laboratory activities at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including mechanics, structural mechanics, soil mechanics, hydraulics, and materials. You will liaise with academic staff to ensure delivery of teaching laboratory exercises consistent with the taught component of undergraduate and postgraduate modules. You will have experience in leading lab-based projects in the area of Civil Engineering.

The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE) is seeking to appoint teaching professionals to provide leadership and support to deliver our undergraduate University of Strathclyde (Bahrain) curricula comprising Electrical and Electronic principles, Analogue and Digital design techniques, Signals & Systems, Instrumentation, Embedded Systems and supporting Mathematics, Physics and Software Engineering. This post will contribute to a team delivering core modules designed to provide a strong and broad understanding of EEE fundamentals allied with a range of EEE specialist modules including Energy & HVT Systems, Digital Signal Processing, Robotics & Control principles, and Renewable Technology. The curriculum covers the breadth of EEE technologies and we will build a team to cover our core and fundamental programme delivery. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will be a domain expert in at least one of the above listed technologies and provide strong leadership to support future growth in our curricula. The teaching will cover the full range of teaching approaches, and will support design, development and delivery of existing modules through face-to-face, in-person and practical laboratory delivery methods.

United Kingdom, Southampton

We are seeking a postdoctoral research fellow to work in the School of Chemistry and Chemical engineering who will contribute to the execution of a 3 year EPSRC funded research project. The Project is led by Prof Goran Mashanovich from the Optical Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton, with Prof David Thomson (ORC) and Dr Samuel Guérin (School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering). The project aims to look at efficient silicon modulators with reduced power consumption. The present position will look at material discovery and optimisation via high-throughput thin film methodology using the facilities at the Material Innovation Laboratory (ex. ACMF). Thin film material optimisation will use synthesis by thermal evaporation in ultra-high vacuum environment combined with automated characterisation techniques. Optimised materials will be tested for device suitability and integrated in prototypes.

This is a unique opportunity for a dynamic and ambitious experimental researcher with interests in developing novel modulators, high throughput methodologies and being part of a team taking novel materials to develop prototypes. The successful candidate should have a first-hand experimental knowledge in vacuum technology and thin film deposition techniques, with a keen interest in high-throughput technology. The research fellow will join a unique research group who are interested in the development and application of high throughput techniques to the discovery and optimisation of novel materials with application in electronics, energy and environmental landscapes.

Candidates should have a PhD or equivalent professional qualification in Physical Chemistry or related discipline, and a track record of academic and research excellence. The ideal candidate should have prior experience and expertise in working with ultra-high vacuum systems and thermal evaporation techniques. Potential candidates should also demonstrate an ability to write research papers independently, present their work at international conferences and be able to work successfully with multidisciplinary teams.  Additional experience in high-throughput material research with particular emphasis on coding would be desirable.

The project will be supervised by Dr Samuel Guérin, from the Energy and Electrochemistry group in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and will involve collaborations with a consortium of academics. Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
