institution

Miyagi Gakuin Women's University is a private institution located in Sendai, capital of the Tohoku region and the second largest Japanese city. It is north of Tokyo. It is also known as the City of Trees and also sometimes as the Academic City as the home of several universities.

Miyagi Girls School was founded in 1886, followed by a high school in 1911 and the formation of Miyagi Academy Women’s College as a university with departments of arts and science, music and English language in 1949.

The institution states that it is "based on the spirit of Evangelical Christianity, to educate women to fear God, to seek truth with both freedom and humility, to respect all people on the principle of loving all our neighbors, and to work for the better welfare of all humans and to contribute to world peace".

There were about 3,000 students in 2018 spread across faculties of education, human life sciences arts and contemporary business, which was founded to mark the institution’s 130th anniversary in 2016 and to "cultivate female business people".

The Institute of Christian Culture dates back to the 1970s and there are also notable strengths in early years education and music. Campus facilities include a Centre for Early Childhood Education and Centre, and the university was among the organisers of a 2019 Gala event at Carnegie Hall in New York.

The university also points to the quality of life in Sendai, with a mild climate, comparatively low living costs and coastal location. The campus, 30 minutes by bus from the downtown city, has been non-smoking since 2007.
