Desautels, Montreal was founded in 1906 as the Department of Commerce within the Faculty of Arts. The McGill School of Commerce was subsequently founded in 1920 as an independent entity. It later merged with The Graduate School of Business Administration (established in 1963) to form the Faculty of Management in 1968. Various additions were made in the 1980s, including the Management Science Research Centre, Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies, Centre for Strategy Studies in Organizations, Centre for International Management Studies and Canada’s first the Applied Investments Program.
The 1990's and 2000's saw a great deal of expansion, including an expansion of master's programmes, and, in 2015, the first GROOC, a group-oriented version of the MOOC (massive open online course). The faculty has a roll of 2,300 undergraduates, 196 MBA students and 65 PhD students.
Desautels, named after ex financier and donor Marcel Desautels, offers programmes for undergraduates including bachelor of commerce (BCom) international summer programme for visiting students (ISP) and minors for non-management students. Majors include: accounting; economics; finance; information systems; international management; labour-management relations and human resources; managing for sustainability; marketing; mathematics; organisational behaviour; statistics and
strategic management. It’s also possible to take "concentrations" of various disciplines to add up to a major.
There are a plethora of master's and executive programmes including: MBA; professional part-time MBA; MD/MBA; MBA/Law; MBA Japan; McGill HEC Montréal Executive MBA (EMBA); global manufacturing and supply chain management programme (GMSCM); master's of management in analytics (MMA); master's of management in finance (MMF); graduate certificate in professional accounting (GCPA Programme); international master's for health leadership (IMHL); and international master's program for managers (IMPM).
The Desautels PhD programme involves four leading Montreal universities: HEC-Montreal, Concordia, UQAM, and McGill. Areas of doctoral specialisation include: accounting, finance information systems, marketing, operations management, organisational behaviour and strategy and organisation.
Research activity is carried out over various centres, including: Business & Management Research Centre (BMRC); Centre for Strategy Studies in Organizations (CSSO); Desmarais Global Finance Research Centre (DGFRC); Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies; International Business Families Centre; Management Science Research Centre (MSRC); Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management (MDIIM); McGill Centre for the Convergence of Health and Economics and the McGill Institute of Marketing (MIM).
Notable faculty include: Alain Bellemare, president and CEO of Bombardier Inc; Lawrence Bloomberg, Chairman of the Board, BloombergSen Inc; André Gremillet, managing director of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra; Mark Hantho, Global Head of Equity Capital Markets & Chairman of Deutsche Bank Securities Inc; Joanne Liu, international president of Doctors Without Borders; Seymour Schulich, author, entrepreneur and philanthropist; and William Shatner, actor and producer.
