Established in 1980 as Koneru Lakshmaiah Education Foundation, KL University initially began as one of the first private engineering colleges in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
The university was named after Koneru Lakshmaiah, a renowned industrialist, educationalist and philanthropist. The university attained autonomous status in 2006 and in 2009 was named KL Deemed to be University. Although popularly known as KL University, officially the name of the university still appears as KL Deemed to be University.
Spread over a large campus of 100 acres, KL University offers a wide range of programmes ranging from fine arts to pharmacy. The university is especially renowned for its industry focused curriculum and its green campus.
The University Grant Commission of India regularly ranks KL University in Category 1 of the top industry-focused universities. The university has eight schools and has formed partnerships with international universities across the world including Stanford University, California State University, and PSB University.

The university, which hosts two girl’s hostels and seven boy’s hostels, provides a conductive environment for students to grow personally as well as professionally.
Apart from several professional societies, KL University also has a student body called KL Student Ordinate which includes 17 clubs providing various platforms for students to showcase their talents.
The university hosts a technical festival every fall semester and a cultural festival every spring semester. A hygienic canteen with customised menus are available on campus and a 24-hour ambulance service are some of the other facilities the university offers for students.
