About

Basic information and contact details for Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research

institution

Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research was a co-educational institution in the United Arab Emirates.

In 2017 it merged with several preexisting universities, namely The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research, and The Petroleum Institute to become Khalifa University.

Its roots went back to the Etisalat College of Engineering, formed in 1989 in Sharjah with the aim to train technological workers for the Emirates Telecommunications Corporation.

The main campus was in the UAE’s capital Abu Dhabi, with another subsidiary campus in the Shanjar province. The Abu Dhabi campus included a student hub, with male and female activity rooms, prayer rooms, several restaurants, a library and more, as well as administration and academic facilities.

The Aerospace Research and Innovation Centre was one of the university’s most exciting research centres. Opened in 2012, the centre aimed to act as a global development hub in the research and creation of aerospace technologies. In 2016, it opened a Micro Electro Mechanical Systems Lab.

It also organised and hosted the Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge. The 2017 competition attracted 316 teams from 45 countries, with total prize money of $5 million (£3.85 million).

Applicants for undergraduate courses had to be a maximum of 20 years of age, though the university may make exceptions. Those who have taken the International Baccalaureate diploma must have scored at least four out of seven in all courses, and have taken mathematics, physics and one additional science. The university has a whistleblowing hotline, for reporting unethical and illegal conduct such as bribery and corruption.

Khalifa University of Science, Research and Technology was ranked by THE until the 2017 World University Rankings. Since the 2018 World University Rankings, Khalifa University (merger of The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research, and The Petroleum Institute) has been ranked instead.
