ABOUT XJTLU

In 2006 Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) was created by the University of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong University – a top ten university in China. Offering a unique international education experience, XJTLU brings together excellent research practice and expertise from both institutions and gives students the skills and knowledge they need to secure careers in a global marketplace. The School of Internet of Things is one of the 7 industry-themed Schools in the XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang). Each School consists of an Education, Research and Development Institute (“ERDI”) for teaching and university-business research collaboration, a professional services centre supporting daily activities of students, staff, and business partners, and a School Affiliated Company jointly established by XJTLU and the School’s industry partner for practical on-the-job learning and teaching.

POSITION OVERVIEW AND RESPONSIBILITIES

An XJTLU Dean is the head of a school on the Taicang Campus at XJTLU and is crucial to its effective operation. The Dean provides leadership and support to the strategic development of the School. The Dean is the key representative role for the School within the university and externally. The Dean is a member of the extended XJTLU Senior Management Team. The Dean reports to the Team Leader, XEC Collective Leadership Team, XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang) for the operation of the School. The initial term of appointment is three years. We are looking for an academic leader from candidates in the fields of IoT, computer science, networking and communications, systems engineering, electronics, data science. The Dean will be responsible for: 

Leadership


	Provide leadership and oversight to the School and leads the School’s Management Team.
	Act as a full member of the XEC Collective Leadership Team, Deans’ Advisory Group and Academic Board.
	Lead the School strategic planning process, with the support of the School Management Team. 
	Ensure teaching, research, and industry engagement activities within the School are adequate to fulfil its mission and vision, and maintain the international accreditation currently held.
	Develop the School’s external engagement, grow collaborations with companies and other non-academic organisations, representing the School both domestically and internationally. This ambassadorial function contributes to the increased reputation and standing of the School.
	Provide executive-level strategic advice, briefings, and support to the leadership team, industry partners for innovation, knowledge exploitation, incubation and acceleration, and serve on a range of institutional committees and groups. 
	Provide leadership, guidance and input into business engagement by driving business growth by identifying opportunities, tracking new markets, and building sustainable client relationships.
	Keep under regular review the key strategic risks and opportunities, internal and external stakeholders relating to the campus strategic plan and the University’s priorities. 
	Provides support for the University leadership agenda, and acts to ensure a synergistic collaboration between the School and the rests of the University.


Administration


	Oversee all management and functional activities within the School. 
	Take action on specific administrative tasks assigned by the university. These include service on committees and working parties; as chair of review panels and etc.
	Specific responsible within the School for: Strategic and annual planning; Work allocation of the senior management staff; Budget development; School-level staff appointments; Staff Professional Development Reviews and processes.


Management


	The Dean line manages all academic staff.
	Ensure staff carry out their duties professionally, effectively, and at the highest standard possible. Management entails talking and communicating with people, providing support to them in their work, ensuring direction and providing useful and meaningful feedback to enable School work to be successfully completed. 
	Effectively manage the progress of the Annual Performance Review and Academic Promotion at School-level.


Key relationships


	The Dean is responsible for the School and reports to the Team Leader, XEC Collective Leadership Team, XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang). 
	The Dean works closely with the Associate Vice-Presidents for Learning and Teaching and Research and Impact to ensure the ongoing development of the portfolio of degree programmes, research outputs, and international activities.
	The Dean works closely with COO for XEC, other Deans in XEC, and the Director of the Centre for Academic Affairs who acts to support the academic work of each department.
	The Dean works closely with the Director of ERDI (Education, Research and Development Institute) in the School and the School Manager to ensure the development of research synergies, provision of administrative services and economies of scale, and activities to raise the profile of the School.
	The Dean works closely with other Deans in the University, especially through the Deans’ Advisory Group which focuses on the strategic development of academic units and of academic staff.
	The Dean works closely with Heads of Department in the University, especially through issues raised through the Deans’ Advisory Group, which is the key forum in the university for the discussion of operational academic affairs.
	The Dean works closely with the XEC’s Chair of the Syntegrative Education Committee.
	The Dean is leader and mentor to all staff in the School, especially for managers at the School level.


Responsibilities


	The Dean is responsible to the Team Leader, XEC Collective Leadership Team, XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang) for the academic development of the School. This includes lead on the development and implementation of appropriate academic programmes at undergraduate, postgraduate taught and research levels.
	The Dean is responsible for the regular assessment of teaching and research outcomes, and works with relevant administrative departments for the improvement of teaching and research outcomes.
	The Dean is responsible for ensuring the application of all university policies and regulations by members of staff in the School.
	The Dean is responsible for ensuring adherence to the laws and directives of the People’s Republic of China by staff in the School.


Personal Attributes

The School of Internet of Things is adopting a new higher education model based upon the concept of Syntegrative Education (SE). SE is a new model developed by the University to address an increasingly networked and complex future of work in the 4th Industrial Revolution. The model is core to the University’s strategy for its next ten-year development focusing on innovation and entrepreneurship. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCES


	Candidates must be a PhD holder in Internet of Things or other related subjects from a world-renowned university or be able to demonstrate an equivalent professional practice and engagement.
	Candidates must be willing/able to actively engage with new educational models such as Syntegrative Education (SE).
	Candidates shall become familiar with and observe Chinese and UK rules and regulations of higher education. 
	Candidates shall have management experience with good people skills and have the ability or experience to form or develop a new academic unit.
	Candidates must have an international reputation and demonstrate impacts in relevant research fields and are expected to have a good sense of the technology trends and relevant research experience on industrial projects. Candidates should have experience to cooperate with industrial partners to develop R&D projects.
	Candidates must have rich experience in research, academic leadership, financial management, strategic planning, people management, as well as senior academic management experience in a university, research institution or similar functions/areas.
	Candidates must demonstrate a good track record of engagement with students and industry. 
	Candidates must have a high level of communicative competence in English; an equivalent knowledge of Chinese would be an advantage.
	Candidates with administration and management experience in international universities or Sino-foreign joint universities are preferred. 
	Some experience of working in a relevant industry would be an advantage.
	Outstanding organisational skills, and ability to prioritise at individual and team levels, to be sensitive to the pressures facing other groups and individuals and to work to deadlines and under pressure.

About the area

The School of Earth and Oceans at The University of Western Australia undertakes diverse fundamental and applied research with recognised strengths in mineral geoscience, petroleum geoscience, geochemistry, hydrogeology and marine geoscience. The School has an international reputation in research and teaching with strong support from the mineral exploration, petroleum and groundwater industries, and well-established collaborations with industry and state and federal government agencies.

The Centre for Exploration Targeting, within the School of Earth and Oceans at UWA, and JCU at Townsville have developed, together with AMIRA (Australian Mineral Industry Research Association) an applied research project which is funded by BHP, AngloGoldAshanti, Newmont, B2Gold and Poderosa). The project also involves Universities in, and Geological Surveys of, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Ecuador.

About the opportunity


	Create/cultivate scientific network with AMIRA sponsors, Geological Surveys and Universities including UWA and JCU.
	Collect structural data and conduct structural-kinematic mapping of selected geological traverses to establish structural – tectonic, petrogenetic architecture across scales.
	Map and collect intrusive rocks in order to reconstruct the petrogenetic and geotectonic framework, their origin and evolution.
	Conduct mineral chemistry analyses on hydrothermal alteration minerals including sulfides. These analyses include but are not restricted to stable and radiogenic isotopes, laser ICP-MS on minerals and fluid inclusions trapped in veins and hydrothermal alteration minerals in veins, breccias and wall rocks.


About you


	PhD qualification in geosciences.
	Experience and proven track record in conducting field based structural geology, petrologic and/or geochemical investigations.
	Experience with geophysical data, interpretation and integration with structural data in order to develop tectonic/structural models.
	Conducting laboratory investigations including geochronology (SHRIMP and laser ICP-MS), SIMS analyses including Lu-Hf and oxygen, sulfur isotopes, laser ICP-MS analyses on zircons, apatite and other accessory minerals is desirable but not essential.
	Demonstrate scientific achievement with a record of publications commensurate with the years in the academic environment.

The HiLIFE - Institute of Biotechnology and the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Helsinki are announcing several open positions in three different research groups at the University of Helsinki Viikki campus. 

Project Description

Three research groups jointly announce open positions in the following project areas 1) structural virology, 2) structural parasitology in the area of mitochondrial supercomplexes and protein translation 3) antiviral inhibitors of protein secretion and 4) novel molecular glue activators of cell-protective stress pathways. The projects will be housed at the University of Helsinki Viikki campus in the groups of Prof. Sarah Butcher (project #1), Group Leader Dr. Alexander Mühleip (project #2) and Research Director Dr. Ville Paavilainen (projects #3-4). All of the positions will be affiliated with a single research group with more detailed project descriptions below. All of the participating groups are located in the same building with shared group meetings and high synergy, including many ongoing collaborative projects. As a result, the selected people will benefit from a highly synergistic and collaborative environment.

Project #1: Sarah Butcher

The HiLIFE - Institute of Biotechnology and the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences at the University of Helsinki, renowned for its international research excellence, is excited to announce openings for both a postdoctoral researcher and a PhD researcher to join the group of Prof. Sarah Butcher. 

Our research focusses on pathogen-host interactions. The successful postdoctoral researcher will join the new Horizon Europe consortium, REFINE to work on West Nile virus entry, inhibition, and prevention, using molecular biology, and structural virology with an emphasis on reconstitution of membrane proteins, virus-antibody interactions, single-particle cryo-EM and image reconstruction. The successful PhD researcher will join the new COMBAT VIRUS project funded by the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation, to work on vaccine development for picornaviruses and characterisation of antiviral molecules. The work will involve primarily single particle cryoEM and image reconstruction. We lead the University of Helsinki cryoEM facility and will give training on all of the relevant techniques, using the in-house 200-kV Talos Arctica microscope fitted with a Falcon 4i camera. Computational resources are provided by the national supercomputer center.

Project #2: Postdoctoral Researcher in structural mitochondrial biology

The HiLIFE - Institute of Biotechnology at the University of Helsinki, renowned for its international research excellence, is excited to announce an opening for a postdoctoral researcher or PhD graduate student to join the group of Dr. Alexander Mühleip. 

Project Description

The research of the group is focused on understanding how protein complexes organise mitochondrial membranes in protozoan parasites and when disrupted by human mitochondrial disorders. The successful applicant will work on the structural and functional characterisation of protein complexes involved in mitochondrial energy conversion and translation in protozoan parasites using protein biochemistry, single-particle cryo-EM and in-situ cryo-electron tomography with subtomogram averaging. Specifically, the project is aimed at visualisation of inner-membrane architecture and characterising parasite-specific modulation of membrane biogenesis. The candidate will also have the opportunity to study the structural basis for inhibition of mitochondrial translation in Toxoplasma gondii in collaboration with leading expert Prof. Lilach Sheiner (University of Glasgow). The project offers the unique opportunity to combine parasitology and mitochondrial biology with state-of-the-art structural biology techniques. The group benefits from in-house availability of a 200-kV Talos Arctica microscope, complemented by access to 300-kV cryo-electron microscopes for data collection at international facilities.

Project #3: Postdoctoral Researcher in structural biology

The HiLIFE - Institute of Biotechnology at the University of Helsinki, renowned for its international research excellence, is excited to announce an opening for a postdoctoral researcher or PhD graduate student to join the group of Dr. Ville Paavilainen. 

Project Description

The current research in the group has two directions with recent funding from the European Union and US National Institutes of Health. The overall goal of the group is to understand basic mechanisms of protein biogenesis, particularly within the early secretory pathway and in the membrane of the mammalian endoplasmic reticulum. Ongoing drug discovery efforts to target ER protein biogenesis in a client-selective manner are aimed for diseases such as cancer and inflammatory conditions. Here, one project is to study how client-selective inhibition of secretory protein biogenesis could be pursued as a new antiviral strategy against viruses such as Ebola. In the second project, we aim to develop new small molecule tools to activate specific ER stress responses as a cell-protective strategy with relevance to neurodegenerative conditions, including Parkinson’s and Altzheimer’s diseases. This work involves structural biology and biophysical experiments to characterize molecular glue mechanisms with their target proteins in collaboration with synthetic chemistry partners. Both projects take advantage of state-of-the-art structural biology methods, including cryo-EM and X-ray crystallography, chemical biology approaches as well as biophysical studies. The group benefits from in-house availability of a 200-kV Talos Arctica microscope, complemented by abundant access to 300-kV cryo-electron microscopes for data collection at international facilities as well as modern X-ray sources in-house as well as frequent access to European synchrotron sources as part of a Finnish block allocation group.

About you

	PhD degree (or be in the final stages of PhD submission) in an area of structural biology, for example using X-ray crystallography or cryo-EM approaches, including atomistic modelling of macromolecules.

The role

Applications are invited from enthusiastic and talented individuals at the post-doctorate research level to work at the Global Centre for Clean Air Research (GCARE; www.surrey.ac.uk/gcare), University of Surrey, UK, under the supervision of Professor Prashant Kumar. The GCARE’s research projects are funded by the UKRI (e.g., EPSRC, NERC, ESRC, Innovate UK), numerous national and international funding bodies (e.g., EU H2020, British Council, UKIERI) and the industry. 

We are looking for a researcher with a PhD degree (or who will receive a PhD degree by December 2024) in the fields of civil, mechanical, chemical, environmental, data science, computer or transportation engineering, physics, chemistry or mathematical sciences or related disciplines.

The appointee will contribute to the GP4Streets project (DIY Greening Prescription for Climate Adaptation in Urban Streets) and support ongoing projects such as the UKRI RECLAIM Network Plus, EU Horizon Europe HealthySailing, various air quality consultancy projects, and NERC GreenCities. As part of the Guildford Living Lab, they will promote GCARE’s research locally, nationally, and internationally and assist with developing new grant applications. Based at the University of Surrey’s GCARE, the appointee will work closely with GCARE team members and project collaborators and may undertake short visits to partner institutions for collaborative research activities.

The postholder must have strong skills in big data analysis and air pollution modelling. Responsibilities include monitoring and modelling the effectiveness of green infrastructure in mitigating air pollution and urban overheating, with advanced statistical data analysis skills (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB). The role calls for a self-driven, independent individual, who can log, clean, share, assess, interpret, and write data efficiently to publish in top-tier journals. A proven track record of timely report writing is essential.
