The role

Postdoctoral position in phonology & morphology on "Rational Evolutionary Phonology"

Prof Erich Round is seeking qualified applicants for a fully-funded two-year postdoctoral project on “REVOLUPHON: Rational Evolutionary Phonology". This postdoctoral project contributes to the core formal-theoretic and cognitive modelling components in the ERC-selected, UKRI-funded project "Rational Evolutionary Phonology", led by Erich Round in 2024–2029.

The position is based at the Surrey Morphology Group at the University of Surrey, and provides the opportunity to work in the vibrant and highly collegial research environment for which SMG is renowned.

Background

REVOLUPHON is an ambitious project in computational cognitive science, cultural evolution and phonological theory, which seeks deeper explanations for human phonology. Though phonological theories are diverse, they contain recurrent axioms and atoms: segments, features, prosodic units, et cetera. We hypothesise that these units of representation are explicable in terms of the interaction of phonetics with resource limitations on human cognition (resource rationality). Separately, recent decades show that phonologies can be reasonably well modelled as optimisation problems, with optimisation imputed to the mind. We hypothesise that apparent optimisation, and its exceptions, arise because phonologies undergo cultural evolution, an optimising process. REVOLUPHON tests these hypotheses through computational modelling of cognition and cultural evolution, to develop new foundations for phonological theory.

Responsibilities

The candidate will be a core member of a research team focused on achieving the REVOLUPHON project aims, and will participate in the broader activities both of the REVOLUPHON group and of the Surrey Morphology Group (SMG). The candidate will have opportunities at SMG to develop their research leadership profile while interacting with world-class researchers. We are currently seeking to appoint an outstanding senior academic as Associate Professor or Professor of Allied Health, in partnership with the Sydney Local Health District (SLHD).The position is a component of a strategic partnership between the School of Health Sciences, FMH and SLHD, with the objective of enhancing the research capability among allied health clinical researchers and fostering the connection between the institutions to support research and education and other activities, such as student placements The position is co-located at the University of Sydney and Sydney Local Health District. This position will work alongside a passionate team of clinicians and researchers in the various allied health disciplines and pursue a research program, may teach in the Professor's relevant field, supervise postgraduate research students and contribute to the discipline's academic programs.

About you (skills, capabilities and experience)

The successful candidate will:


	Hold a PhD in an academic field relevant to the role
	Be registered as an allied health professional with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or is eligible for membership of the relevant allied health professional association if a self-regulated profession.
	Be a leading authority within their area of expertise and have an international reputation for excellence
	Possess a sound understanding of the NSW public health system and current challenges and priorities
	Possess a sound understanding of the key strategic issues in the higher education sector
	Have experience in people leadership and management within the higher education sector and demonstrated ability to supervise and/or mentor others to success
	Be passionate about improving health service delivery at the local level through enabling quality research and translation of research to practice by others
	Have demonstrated success in leading an academic endeavour from curriculum design to producing leading research and providing a student-enabling environment
	Have a distinguished record of scholarly teaching excellence (as evidenced through successful student outcomes, demonstrated impact on student learning, recognition through awards/prizes, and innovation)
	Have international reputation as an authority in their discipline or area of expertise with a strong track record of successful competitive research grants, publications, and evidence of recognition within the broader research community


Term and remuneration

This is a full time, continuing position. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate's relevant experience and qualifications. The level of appointment will be determined during the selection process, based on experience and track record. Applicants with suitable qualifications may be eligible for a salaried NSW Health Clinical appointment in SLHD subject to clinical need and funding.

About the Role 

Following the opening of the University’s new state-of-the-art City Campus, we are looking for a Campus Safety and Security Supervisor to ensure the safety of the staff, students and visitors of our sites.

The Campus Safety and Security Supervisor will be expected to operate within a framework of established policies and procedures to ensure the safety of the patrons and the security of the campuses and its facilities.

The key position responsibilities of the Campus Safety and Security Supervisor will include (but is not limited to):


	Overseeing and supervising the daily operations of security staff and contracted staff, ensuring all security protocols and procedures are followed.
	Providing training and support to security staff, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform their duties effectively.
	Initiating and undertaking regular safety audits and risk assessments, identifying potential security vulnerabilities and implementing corrective actions in collaboration with the Safety & Security Manager.
	Enforcing and ensuring proper functionality of all university security protocols, including card access, CCTV, key control, patrols, and surveillance are strictly followed by the security team including external service providers.
	Establishing and maintaining strong working relationships with university internal stakeholders, external security groups and stakeholders, emergency services and law enforcement agencies.


This position may require working outside of normal hours, participating in a rostered on-call arrangement, or serving as an Emergency Control Coordinator for the University.

About You 

The successful candidate will need to have experience in supervising and overseeing security officers and operations. A vital part of the role will be supervising, training and supporting the on-campus security staff, and ensuring they are informed and educated at a high-enough level to follow all security protocols and procedures.

This position will report to the Campus Safety and Security Manager located at the Bedford Park campus, so the successful candidate will need to be someone who is autonomous and ready to make the role their own; willing to be the face of security at our Campuses and ensure its smooth operation on a day-to-day basis. A key aspect of delivering these outcomes will be the ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with University internal stakeholders, external security groups, emergency services and law enforcement agencies. This will require a ‘people person’ with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and an ability to operate well under pressure.

About the Property, Facilities and Development team: 

The Property, Facilities and Development (PFD) team works across all of Flinders’ places, spaces, and physical infrastructure. Working to four key areas: Strategic Planning and Sustainability; Capital Development; Customer and Site Services; and Strategic Projects, and we are responsible for the planning, development, capital delivery, management, and maintenance of university spaces to ensure they are fit for purpose and support Flinders to deliver its strategic objectives. RISC-V is an open-source microprocessor instruction set, which is gaining interest in academia and industry. In Aalto, Department of Electronics and nanoengineering, we have developed our own open-source RISC-V core implementation that we can use as a controller in our mixed-mode System-on-Chip designs.  

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work with us on this area of research. In this position we provide the possibility for hands-on development of your ideas in processor design as a member of our RISC-V design team within the scope of the projects you will be affiliated with. 

Topic focuses on improving current RISC-V implementation and merging it with digital and analog signal processing and cryptography accelerators and sensor interfaces advancing to implementation on silicon or verification on FPGA according to your preferences. The position is appropriate for PhDs eager to reach to state-of-the-art, with enthusiasm to go where very few have gone before. 

The successful execution of the work requires willingness to learn fluent Unix working habits, Git version control, shell scripting, Python, and Scala/Chisel programming, complemented with doctoral level knowledge of digital and analog design tools and methodology. Minimum entry criteria is D.Sc. or PhD degree in microelectronics design or computer science and working proficiency in English.
