The role

To research and develop software modules, tools and API for a project that aims to create a secure decentralised data marketplace based on distributed ledger technology, web technologies and AI.

The role will focus on developing solutions to address barriers to information and data exchange such as data quality and interoperability, and efficient processing and management of time-series datasets and metadata originating from IoT sources (such as environment sensors and meters) closer to the data provider at the edge, rather than the cloud, which will require innovation in compute efficiency and scalability. 

The role will also focus on IoT data engineering, analysis and management, improve data quality through data and machine learning processing pipelines. It will also focus on developing AI algorithms for semantically enriching data assets with domain knowledge, which feed into building knowledge graphs, search and discovery mechanisms.

The outputs will be integrated and validated against a set of real-world IoT use cases.

A talent for technical problem solving is a must. You will encounter a wide range of technologies and data and will be given many opportunities to develop further your skills.

You will be responsible in contributing to iterative deliverables for the project such as technical reports, software integrations and source code releases. You will also be expected to travel abroad for project meetings and dissemination events. This is a collaborative project and will require you to actively liaise with other organisations.

	A PhD in Computer Science or Engineering (other closely related area) or and MSc with experience. 
	Experience with programming in Python, Java, or JavaScript in the context of data and metadata management and analysis for web-based solutions.
	Experience in Data engineering, analysis and management workflows for times-series (tabular, structured) data.
	Experience in developing workflows for metadata management, which can involve schema modelling, formatting, annotation, enrichment, search and discovery.
	Experience in Machine Learning model development/optimisation and workflows for time-series (tabular, structured) data, and for (generative) metadata enrichment.
	Experience with tools for source code management, automation pipelines for software development and machine learning processes, and deployment.
	Experience with virtualisation tools such as Docker and Kubernetes.

About the team:

The research group Scientific Computing, led by Prof. Siegfried Benkner, focuses on research in programming paradigms, languages, compilers, and software and hardware infrastructures for scientific computing to support users in the process of solving increasingly complex compute- and data-intensive problems in science and engineering on high-end parallel and distributed computing platforms.
The selected candidate will participate in an international and interdisciplinary research project under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Atakan Aral.  The project aims to ensure seamless and reliable monitoring of critical infrastructures (e.g., facilities for water supply and electricity generation) through real-time and distributed processing of IoT sensor data. The project team will include doctoral and master’s students in our group, as well as international partners from the University of Sheffield, UK, and University College Dublin, Ireland.

Your future tasks:

Active participation in research and administration, which means:


	You develop an independent research profile in the field of distributed systems.
	You get involved in the research and management of the EU project mentioned above.
	You supervise the research conducted by master’s and doctoral students.

This is a purely research-oriented position with no teaching duties, unless the candidate specifically requests them, in which case additional compensation will be provided.

These are your qualifications:


	You have completed doctoral/PhD studies in Computer Science or a closely related field, or you expect to complete them by 31.12.2024.
	You have established experience in distributed systems, ideally in the areas of the Internet of Things, Edge/Cloud Computing, Edge AI/Federated Learning, or Sensor Networks, with a focus on resource management, latency/performance optimization, fault tolerance, scalability, or energy efficiency/sustainability.
	You have research competence and initiative proven through international publications in reputable conferences and journals.
	You have excellent written and spoken English skills, demonstrated by high-quality academic writing and communication. (Our working language is English.)
	You are experienced in research management and leading project staff.

As a Senior Consultant, Workplace Relations, you will play a key role in managing complex employee relations issues and providing expert guidance on workplace matters, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and promoting a positive and equitable work environment. 	Contribute to enterprise bargaining efforts, preparing EA documentation for the Fair Work Commission and supporting good faith negotiations.
	Lead or support investigations into misconduct, discrimination, harassment, and bullying, preparing reports with actionable recommendations.


To be successful, you’ll have:


	A postgraduate qualification in a relevant field or equivalent experience in workplace relations and/or employment law
	Extensive knowledge of workplace/industrial relations legislation and practices and ideally, at least 3 years post admissions experience
	Proven experience in managing complex workplace relations issues and influencing key stakeholders
	Demonstrated ability to provide training and coaching on workplace relations issues, including conflict resolution and grievance management
	Excellent interpersonal skills, with a strong ability to build and maintain productive relationships across all levels of the university and with external partners
