A University That Has Advocated Human Rights and Democracy
Chonnam National University is an icon of democracy, human rights, and justice.
In the decades of oppression and pain under colonization and dictatorship in Asia, CNU, which is located in the southwestern part of the Korean Peninsula, took a leading role in protesting for the universal values of mankind. CNU was at the heart of the May 18th Democratization movement, during which citizens in Gwangju fought against the oppressive military regime in South Korea in 1980. The human rights documentary heritage archives, regarding the sacrifice and agony of both CNU and the citizens of Gwangju during the democratization movement, was proudly registered as a UNESCO Memory of the World in recognition of its value in pursuing humane values.
A University with Excellent Research Capabilities
CNU has excellent research capabilities. As of 2017 and 2018, CNU is proud to be ranked first in the amount of received research funds among Korean National Universities for two consecutive years.

Core University for R & D in AI
CNU is also focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) research. Since an AI integrated complex is going to be established in Gwangju, it will become the center of AI research in Korea. As the largest and best research and academic institution in the area, CNU is proactively stepping forward by opening the College of AI Convergence to support the next step of local industries. The new college provides multi-disciplinary majors in IOT AI convergence engineering, robotics, big data-based finance, future energy sources, and intelligent mobility convergence engineering to students majoring in various fields of study. Cultural technology (CT), block-chain technology, and drone technology will be new additions in academic fields for the College.
A National University That Interacts with the World
CNU has conducted academic exchange programs with 499 universities in 62 countries around the world, and more than 2,800 international alumni in 66 countries have established overseas networks. More than 2,000 international students are enrolled in CNU programs. In particular, the International Summer Session attracted more than 500 students at home and abroad, including 125 international students from 48 universities across 25 countries. All 22 courses were offered by internationally-renowned scholars and taught in English.
In addition, more than 700 CNU students traveled all over the world as CNU representatives for studying abroad, overseas volunteering, and cultural exchanges in places as diverse as Manchester, LA, Warsaw, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Kuala Lumpur.
A University with Excellent Colleges and Hospitals
CNU has proudly attained colleges with international prestige. The CNU Medical School and Graduate School of Dentistry are working with renowned medical professionals to develop treatments for humankind and eradicate diseases. It also has three specialized medical centers, including hospitals specializing in cancer and rheumatic diseases. In addition, the CNU Law School has fostered legal professionals for the international stage and the CNU MBA has achieved accomplishments including a five-year Business Education Accreditation of the AACSB International (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International), which is a world-renowned institute with 100 years of tradition.
