About the opportunity

The Head, Research and Development for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) is a dynamic leadership role that drives the Faculty's vision for research excellence. This role is at the forefront of shaping strategy, advising academic leaders, and spearheading innovative projects that enable research activity growth.

This role will guide the development of cutting-edge programs to support the growth of researchers at every stage of their careers, attract world-class research talent, diversify funding streams, and enhance research impact across the Faculty's diverse schools and research centres. You will play a pivotal role in fostering a vibrant research environment, providing strategic insights to academic leaders, and ensuring researchers have the resources and support they need to thrive.

Managing a small team, you will collaborate with key stakeholders to enrich the experience of HDR students and supervisors, ensuring a seamless integration of services that contribute to the University's overall mission. This role offers the opportunity to shape the future of research within a leading academic institution, driving both innovation and excellence at a global level.

Your key responsibilities will be to:


	support the Faculty Leadership Group in defining research goals, developing strategic priorities, and implementing initiatives to achieve research objectives, including tracking effectiveness and addressing challenges.
	provide expert advice on governance, management, and decision-making with regard to strategic initiatives and research centres, and contribute to the Faculty's risk management,
	maintain oversight of emerging opportunities and factors impacting research activities, and offer insights on how to operate within the context of the external environment
	manage resources efficiently, monitor staff performance, and foster collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure high-quality research education and supervision
	identify and manage risks to the Faculty's research strategy and core services, ensuring compliance with University policies, regulatory requirements, and WHS management systems while proactively addressing potential risks and opportunities for improvement
	as nominated by the Associate Dean (Research), Dean or Faculty General Manager represent the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences on any committees established by the University or externally.


About you


	postgraduate qualifications in humanities or social sciences, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
	in-depth understanding of the Higher Education sector and its alignment with the University's research goals with the ability to assess challenges and opportunities, translating them into effective programs for desired outcomes
	skilled in asking strategic questions, exploring options, and devising and implementing the best solutions
	strong leadership in guiding teams through complex situations and inspiring high performance and collaboration
	deep understanding of the Faculty's research plans, and adept at navigating university structures and resources to achieve goals.

Reporting to the Executive Dean for the Faculty of Health, the Associate Dean, Indigenous will work collaboratively with the Faculty Executive and key roles throughout the University to deliver on the individualised Faculty Compacts and inform future strategy requirements through shaping initiatives, ways of working and cultural requirements. An extensive, well-established network and demonstrated longstanding working relationships with Victorian Indigenous communities is essential for success within this critical, high-profile position.

To be successful, you’ll have: 


	Qualifications and experience commensurate with appointment at Level D-E, including a PhD or equivalent in a discipline relevant to the Faculty of Health.
	Extensive, well-established network and longstanding working relationships with Victorian Indigenous communities, built on trust, cultural understanding and mutual respect.
	A demonstrated record of innovation, achievement and quality improvement in teaching to implement sustainable change.
	A comprehensive understanding of Indigenous communities, cultures and contemporary issues, within Victoria and more broadly across Australia, particularly issues of education for Indigenous Australians.
	Demonstrated effective leadership with a proven track record of developing and implementing strategies for advancing Indigenous success in education and employment.
	Strategic thinking and the ability to provide leadership and guidance for the academic directions of the faculty.
	Strong track record of collaboration with academics, researchers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and internal and other external stakeholders.
	Ability to develop partnerships and alliances with professional, industry and government organisations and with other educational institutions in Australia and overseas in advancing Indigenous learning and teaching innovations.
	Understanding of the Health sector, established network and working relationships within the Victorian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Based within the School of Engineering, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists and policy experts, with access to unique, world-class facilities.

About You

We are seeking candidates with expertise at the intersection of engineering and environmental science, particularly in robotics, seafloor imaging, automated data interpretation, data management, and marine ecology. You will actively contribute to research, with opportunities to join offshore expeditions deploying camera imaging systems via robotic submersibles. Key responsibilities include:


	Preparation and participation in offshore survey expeditions deploying camera equipped robotic submersibles
	Managing and preparing expedition data for open access under FAIR principles.
	Developing machine-assisted workflows for advanced ecological data interpretation.
	Publishing findings and open-sourcing methods to support the wider research community.


The role involves leveraging vast datasets, including high-resolution imaging collected by you, to address research questions in geospatial, biological, and oceanographic fields. Data analysis methods may include machine learning, AI, uncertainty quantification, and data assimilation.

	A doctorate completed or near completion in a relevant discipline or equivalent qualifications and experience

Job Purpose

Reporting to the Program Manager, Program Director/Director/Principal Investigator, and other co-PIs. To provide high quality research work by applying statistical programming and related methods and scientific expertise to the design, implementation, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of clinical research studies. 

To undertake internationally competitive research aimed at publication thereby contributing to the academic and research mission of the University.

Strategic Responsibilities


	Scope relating to research projects as assigned by line manager.
	Perform research-related activities including research question formulation, efficient literature review, data collection, data analysis, write up of a full manuscript (background, methods, results, discussion, conclusion sections, referencing), submitting for publications as requested.
	Working closely with colleagues to help interpret findings and draft manuscripts and other reports for publication.


Operational Responsibilities

Research related tasks


	Participate in scientific research as a professionally responsible member of the research team
	Participates in the analysis, interpretation and presentation of quantitative data using appropriate computer software programs.
	Participate in problem exploration, and definition, planning of the approach and sequence of steps, execution of experiments or studies, interpretation of findings, documentation and reporting of results and progress, maintenance of research records and compliance to all established policies and procedures

Qualifications

Required Qualifications


	PhD from a reputable university in an appropriate discipline.
	Relevant degree or statistical training (e.g. PhD, Preferably Biostatics, Statistics, Public Health, or Epidemiology);
	Experience of statistical or other programming languages to manipulate large-scale datasets with epidemiology information (excellent data management and analysis skills) - e.g. Python, R;
	Strong quantitative skills and analytical reasoning applied to observational data;
	A track record of authoring scientific publications.


Required Experience

At least 2 years of relevant experience as a Post-doctoral researcher with publications in journals in the relevant field

The Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences (HaSS) is seeking to appoint a 12month fixed term Learning Technologist to work within the Faculty IT development team.

The successful applicant will primarily focus upon the creation of new, and conversion of existing courses to online learning. Working closely with academic colleagues you will have excellent communication and customer facing skills, producing high quality teaching material with particular focus upon online, blended and distance learning styles of delivery.

You will provide expert advice to enhance teaching, learning and assessment through the utilisation of learning technologies including Moodle VLE, and collaborative platforms such as Office365 (MS Teams), Zoom, YouTube live streaming for engaged group working, interactive learning and discussion forums.

The successful applicant will join a team of specialists who are responsible for delivering Faculty IT services and supporting academic colleagues in the use of technology. A flexible approach to work is required, with the team providing excellent customer service that may include occasional evening and weekend activity.
