Description

A research assistant position is available at the Objects and Knowledge Laboratory, headed by Dr. Olivia Cheung, at NYU Abu Dhabi (https://www.oliviacheunglab.org). The research assistant will carry out experiments on high-level vision (e.g., object, face, letter, scene recognition) in humans using behavioral, fMRI, and computational methods. Potential research projects include, but are not limited to, investigations of the influences of experience and conceptual knowledge on visual recognition.

Applicants must have a bachelors or masters degree in Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Cognitive Science, or a related field, and should possess strong programming skills (e.g., Matlab, Python, R). Prior experience with fMRI, computational, or psychophysical techniques is highly preferred. The preferred start date is in January 2025.

The Objects and Knowledge Laboratory is part of the rapidly growing expertise in Cognitive Neuroscience at NYU Abu Dhabi. The lab has access to the state-of-the-art neuroimaging and behavioral facilities (including MRI, MEG, EEG, eyetracking).

The role

An exciting opportunity for a Postdoc Graduate to work at the University of Surrey in the area of complex networks, and threat intelligence, focusing on advanced persistent threats (APTs) on 5G networks (O-RAN).

The post holder will join the team of researchers working on network security, prediction and learning on O-RAN (5G/6G) networks, and research sub-projects.  The primary responsibility for this post is to develop Reinforcement Learning models, off the back of observations of data traffic on the O-RAN of the core network, and produce optimal response strategies. The project work entails building a Digital Twin for extensive simulations of realistic APT attacks on the O-RAN (of the 5G/6G ICS at Surrey).

About you

 We are looking for applicants that demonstrate strong research and analytical skills, have strong communication skills and enthusiasm for developing their own research ideas. Applicants should also have a good understanding of the 5G core network, threat intelligence as well as software engineering good practice. Familiarity with python (pytorch, tensorflow) and open source 5G testbeds would be an advantage.

The School of Health Sciences at the University of Southampton is offering a unique opportunity for an Allied Health Professional (AHP) academic leader to join the Active Living Research Group as a Professor/Associate Professor. The Active Living Research group (co-led by Professor Catherine Bowen and Professor Maggie Donovan-Hall) is a multidisciplinary research team whose research activities aim to enable lifelong active living.

Candidates must demonstrate excellence in conducting innovative and impactful research, and should have a national and international profile, including a proven track record of attracting competitive funding with associated outputs, as well as the ambition and potential to secure significant research funding.

The successful applicant will be expected to engage and lead education activities associated with the School of Health Sciences portfolio of undergraduate and post-graduate programmes. This includes BSc (hons) Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy programmes, and/or post-graduate programmes in AHP Advanced Clinical Practice.

About the job

For a position as a PhD Candidate, the goal is a completed doctoral education up to an obtained doctoral degree.

The PhD position is within the field of experimental materials physics with a focus on in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization of aluminum alloys. The position is part of SFI PhysMet and the research area Multiscale Materials Analysis. SFI PhysMet -Centre for Sustainable and Competitive Metallurgical and Manufacturing Industry - is a centre for innovation at NTNU with research partners NTNU, SINTEF and IFE and user partners from the metallurgical and manufacturing industry in Norway. The PhD project will be carried out in close collaboration with other PhD students, postdoctoral fellows, SINTEF researchers and industry partners in the centre. 

Norway produces over 2 million tons of aluminum per year, most of this is so-called age-hardenable alloyswith some percentages of alloying elements (Mg, Si, Zn, Cu..) added. These alloys gain their strength from nanoscale precipitates embedded in the aluminium matrix. Composition and thermomechanical processing are what determine the microstructure of the alloy, which in turn determines properties such as strength, ductility, and corrosion. Today, there is a desire to include more recycled material in products, which affects the composition and thus properties. This PhD project will study microstructure in situ during heating, using state-of-the-art characterization techniques, with emphasis on TEM. Use of the NORTEM infrastructure at TEM Gemini Center will be important in the PhD study, including data analysis and method development. In situ data typically falls under the big data category and the ideal candidate should have an interest in developing machine learning tools. This involves observing unprecedented phenomena and is well beyond the state-of-the-art. This is also an exciting time to join the TEM Gemini Centre as we are currently installing a new top instrument that will be operational by August 2025.

Duties of the position


	Perform original research, collaborate closely with other researchers in SFI PhysMet, TEM Gemini Centre and the in situ project group.
	Plan and carry out experiments according to the project goals with the support of industry partners.
	Write and publish journal articles and present results at international scientific conferences.
	Perform advanced TEM studies and in situ microstructure studies of precipitation development in age-hardenable aluminum alloys. 
	Develop analysis methods and high throughput analysis of TEM data.


Required selection criteria


	You must have a professionally relevant background in nanotechnology, physics and/or materials technology.
	Your education must correspond to a five-year Norwegian degree program, where 120 credits are obtained at master's level
	You must have a strong academic background from your previous studies and an average grade from the master's degree program, or equivalent education, which is equal to B or better compared with NTNU's grading scale. If you do not have letter grades from previous studies, you must have an equally good academic basis. If you have a weaker grade background, you may be assessed if you can document that you are particularly suitable for a PhD education.
	Current master's students can apply, but the master's degree must be obtained and documented before the start of the position and no later than 15 August 2025.
	You must meet the requirements for admission to the faculty's doctoral program https://www.ntnu.edu/nv/phd/admission.
	You must be able to document knowledge and hands-on experience with TEM.
	You must have basic computer and programming skills. High level skills here can compensate for a lack of hands-on skills in TEM.
	You must have good oral and written presentation skills in English and preferably also in Norwegian.


The appointment is to be made in accordance with Regulations on terms of employment for positions such as postdoctoral fellow, Phd candidate, research assistant and specialist candidate and Regulations concerning the degrees of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) and Philosodophiae Doctor (PhD) in artistic research national guidelines for appointment as PhD, post doctor and research assistant

Salary and conditions

As a PhD candidate (code 1017) you are normally paid from gross NOK 532 200 per annum before tax. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

The period of employment is 3 years.

Appointment to a PhD position requires that you are admitted to the PhD programme in physics  within three months of employment, and that you participate in an organized PhD programme during the employment period.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.

The position is subject to external funding. 

It is a prerequisite you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.

The role

ESRC funded project: Dyadic Nostalgia in Couple Relationships

We invite applications for a Research Fellow to join a team of psychologists working on the project Dyadic Nostalgia in Couple Relationships (ES/Z503642/1; fixed term contract for 42 months). The project is funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and will explore the role, dynamics and potential uses of the emotion of nostalgia in romantic couple relationships. The project includes a programme of quantitative and qualitative studies as well as a suite of activities and outputs to engage the public and key stakeholders (e.g., charities and relationship therapists).

Key Responsibilities

The post-holder will:


	Conduct quantitative research with couples (e.g., surveys, daily diaries, experiments, behavioural observation).
	Co-supervise graduate research assistants working on two qualitative studies
	Collaborate with the team of investigators at the University of Surrey and University of Southampton
	Liaise with non-academic project partners as part of the project’s Advisory Group and impact activities
	Contribute to dissemination via international conferences, authorship on peer-reviewed publications, and public and stakeholder engagement


The post-holder will be based in the School of Psychology at the University of Surrey. The School of Psychology is a vibrant and welcoming community based on the beautiful Stag Hill campus in Guildford. The post-holder will be a member of the Social Psychology research group, which has expertise in social emotions, social equality, and relationships, and will collaborate with the Centre for Research on Self and Identity at the University of Southampton.
