About the position

La Trobe University and Cisco have had a long-standing partnership. A key outcome of this collaboration was the establishment of the Cisco Chair of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT), along with the Cisco-La Trobe Centre for AI and IoT in 2020. The Cisco-La Trobe Centre is the first of its kind globally and the only one in Australia dedicated to exploring the intersection of AI and IoT technologies.

This academic position will be based at the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology (CSIT), part of the School of Computing, Engineering, and Mathematical Sciences (SCEMS). SCEMS is one of 10 schools across La Trobe’s multi-campus operations and comprises over 120 academic staff across three departments: Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology, and Mathematical and Physical Sciences, located in Melbourne (Bundoora) and Bendigo.

The Department is seeking a Level C academic with demonstrated experience in research, teaching, and industry engagement in the areas of AI, IoT, and telecommunications. The successful candidate will serve as Deputy Director of the Cisco - La Trobe Centre for AI and IoT for a fixed term, aligned with the duration of the Cisco - La Trobe partnership agreement. This position reports to the Cisco Chair and the Director of the Cisco Centre. The Deputy Director will work closely with the Director to ensure the University fulfils its commitments to the Cisco partnership. The appointee will also hold a continuing teaching and research position within the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology.

Some of your key duties will include:


	Conduct and lead innovative and high impact research and produce conference and seminar papers and publications resulting from that research.
	Obtain external research funding from contracts/grants/consultancies.
	Play a significant role in research projects including leadership of research teams and/or management of projects.
	Supervise Higher Degree by Research (HDR), honours and postgraduate students.
	Report to and assist the Cisco Chair and Director of the Cisco-La Trobe Centre for AI and IoT in fulfilling the University’s commitments to the Cisco partnership.
	Perform the duties of the Deputy Director of the Cisco Centre, including acting as the Director in their absence, if required.
	Collaborate with Cisco to scope and design projects and use cases aligned with the interests of both Cisco and the University.
	Work with Cisco and its ecosystem partners to identify and pursue external funding opportunities.
	Contribute to the overall leadership and management of the Cisco Centre as a member of the Centre’s leadership team.


Skills and Experience


	Completion of a PhD or equivalent accreditation and standing recognised by the University/profession as appropriate for the relevant discipline area.
	A proven track record of research and scholarly achievements in IoT, telecommunications, artificial intelligence (AI), and their applications in various domains.
	A proven track record of securing competitive external research funding.
	Demonstrated ability to translate research into real-world applications, align academic outcomes with industry needs, and establish collaborations.
	Proven ability to lead and manage the accreditation process for academic programs.
	Demonstrated experience and ability to manage work-integrated learning.
	Demonstrated ability to articulate joint teaching programs with international universities.
	Commitment to teaching excellence, focusing on delivering high-quality education and fostering active student engagement.

A Research Assistant (master’s thesis position) in noble metal nanoclusters (NCs)-based optical materials applicable for biosensing is available at Molecular Materials group, Department of Applied Physics (School of Science) at Aalto University.

Our research focuses on synthesis and surface modifications of ultra-small metal nanoclusters for advanced biomedicines and sensing. In this project, we are developing the novel metal NCs with unique optoelectronic properties. NCs, synthesized with tailored optoelectronic properties, are activated by exposure to specific wavelengths of light. This project offers a unique opportunity for a talented, dedicated, and diligent master’s student to work with ultra-small metal NCs together with a mentor having internationally recognized expertise in this field. The master’s thesis work contributes to a multi-disciplinary consortia preparation initiative with global ambitions.

Your role and experience

We are looking for a master’s student to work with us on materials synthesis, characterizations, and applications in biosensors. We would like the student to have:


	Suitable studies (experimental) in related fields such as materials science, electrochemistry, and nanotechnology
	Excellent study record
	Good English & team working skills


Finnish language is not required.

Are you interested in understanding and tackling the impacts of climate change? Do you want to support the transition to more equitable forms of development? If the answers to these questions are yes, then read on.

What will I be doing?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Research Associate to join the School of Global Development to research climate resilient development. You will work as part of an interdisciplinary research team across the CLimate Adaptation and REsilience (CLARE) research programme exploring critical issues related to climate adaptation. 

That sounds really interesting, but can you provide a bit more information?

You will define, design and lead the work on climate resilient development across the CLARE research programme. You will be based within the SUCCESS research project but work across the portfolio of projects funded under the CLARE programme. Your specific responsibilities are to synthesise the research and knowledge on climate resilient development that is being generated within the CLARE programme. Within this role you will be expected to make significant contributions to new knowledge. You will also be expected to foster strong research partnerships, strengthen capacity and pursue research impact in support of transformational change. 

That sounds great, but do I have the right attributes for the role?

You will have:


	A postgraduate level qualification and experience in a relevant research area
	A track record of independent research supported by publications in respected journals. 
	Strong research and analysis skills and be comfortable working with qualitative or quantitative data.


Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are a must as the project works in a variety of contexts and geographies. Experience of climate adaptation within the global south is desirable. 

This full-time post is available from 3 March 2025 on a fixed-term basis for 21 months.

Position Summary:

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Green Electrochemical Transformation of Carbon Dioxide aims to drive innovations in carbon dioxide electrochemistry, enabling the conversion of CO2 into valuable products and supporting Australia’s transition to a carbon-neutral economy. By combining experimental and computational approaches, the Centre will develop industry-ready CO2 utilisation technologies. It will foster international collaboration, positioning itself as a hub for research, training, and strategic advice, helping to accelerate Australia's net-zero emissions goals while fostering a sustainable economy and creating future jobs.

Candidates must have completed their degree prior to commencing the position, though it is not required at the time of the offer.

The ideal candidate will have a proficiency in a range of chemical laboratory techniques, including nanoparticle synthesis and characterisation, as well as experience in the synthesis and analysis of solid-state materials.

In addition, we are particularly interested in candidates with experience working in cross-disciplinary research environments, and those with expertise in Electrochemistry. Practical skills in advanced materials characterisation and investigating the catalytic properties of chemical systems would also be highly valuable and a proven ability to develop independent, fundable research projects will set you apart.

To be successful you will need: 


	A PhD in a relevant field (Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering) with relevant post-graduate experience, or a combination of education, training, and professional experience.
	Strong proficiency in a range of chemical laboratory techniques, including nanoparticle synthesis, characterisation, and solid-state materials synthesis and analysis.
	Proven experience in written and oral communication, including preparing manuscripts, presenting at conferences, and preparing grant applications.
	Demonstrated ability to take on a leadership role, collaborating with students, colleagues, supervisors, and funding bodies to drive research forward.
